Tom & Jerry Golden Collection: Volume One
J**E
The original theatrical shorts.
I love Tom & Jerry. Classic animated cartoons that most people can watch and get into. Why I say most, is these cartoons, made back then, were more violent and had themes that today's generation of viewers tend to criticize and get offended over. Some of these cartoons would be edited or not even aired on today's networks. Which is why, if you want to watch the original stuff, buy this collection. These cartoons are not only remastered, but are the uncut, uncensored. Meaning the violence, themes and anything else, will be shown as the way it was intended. Not edited.Unlike the DVD Spotlight collection released before, the Blu-ray collection is in chronological order.Unfortunately, the second collection was cancelled by Warner Bros for unknown reasons. Perhaps, one day, maybe, they'll release the rest of the Tom & Jerry Cartoons. The cartoons are fun as heck. Makes me laugh still. Tom, Jerry, Spike and the housekeeper. The housekeeper, you never see her face, doesn't put up with Tom's antics and usually lets him have it. The episode I really liked was Part-Time Pal (1947). Tom accidentally got drunk, decides to make friends with Jerry, when dinner isn't served, he goes upstairs to confront the housekeeper while Jerry begs him not to do so, but Tom walks into her room and throws a jug of water on her. She ends up destroying the downstairs, goes outside chasing him with the broom. The 37 original cartoons are uncensored, uncut and remastered.

Great for fans of Golden Age Animation
I'm very glad I finally bought this collection. I held off for a while and then it became unavailable for a while. Once it was re-released, I knew it was time. The cartoons themselves are all fantastic. the comedic timing and fluidity of the animation are all top notch. They get even better as time progresses. William Hanna and Joseph Barbera directed all of these, but you can see how their technique changes and improves with each cartoon. Some have said that when Tex Avery joined MGM studios, he had such a major impact that all animation directors tried to keep up with Tex. You can certainly see his influence in the later cartoons. (Incidentally, check out Tex Avery Screwball Classics Volume 1. I bought and reviewed that release as well. Another Must-have).There are some downsides to this package, but I consider them minimal. One is that the digital transfer for some of these cartoons is not as good as others. It seems that some came from video kinescope and others came directly from original film negatives. The original film negative transfers are much brighter and sharper than the others. However, in some cases, the only surviving copies were the video kinescopes, so that can't be helped.Another is the sanctimonious "warning" at the beginning of these discs stating how these cartoons are a "product of their times" and they're "racist". Balderdash. For one thing, don't ever believe that this generation is better or more enlightened than previous generations. Every generation has problems and their own form of prejudice. For another, people can point to the black lady of the house and say she's a racist figure. She was voiced by a black woman (Lillian Randolph) and she clearly owned the house that Tom and Jerry lived in. It was a nice house! That's not racism. I'm very glad that these cartoons are complete and unedited. We need to preserve the art and talents of previous generations even if we don't agree with what was done.I encourage anybody who likes classic animation to get this volume. I also encourage you to show these cartoons to younger viewers and watch with them. You may be surprised to find that kids may still love these timeless cartoons. It may also encourage Warner Studios to release more volumes so that we can all enjoy more classics like Tom and Jerry.

Top flight early Tom and Jerry! The best!
Many cartoon enthusiasts believe the early Tom and Jerry's are the best, and I'm in that crowd! The series was great from the start as evidenced by disc one of this set, which hits the road full throttle and dosn't stop! Not a clnker in the bunch! Disc two sees the series hitting it's stride and delivering the cartoon laughs and mayhem that first delighted audiences in e the 1940's. And no, at 70, I don't believe cartoon violence has warped me in any way, but if parents have concerns, do check it out beforehand. And if you find yourself laughing like a kid again, share it with the kids! A first-rate addition to any animated cartoon library! Recommended!
