ALBENIZ: Spanish Music For Classical Guitar

Another incredible David Russell recording. This is his best Spanish album. Better than Music of Torroba. His Barrios, Giuliani and Baroque albums are must haves.

David Russell is a master of nuances, phrases and accents and he loves the sound of the guitar. All the pieces on this album sound fresh and original and unveil musical phrases I have never heard before, especially his interpretation of Mallorca. His originality is never ostentatious, it always stays true to the spirit of music. Highly recommended.

David Russell is one of the current best guitarists. It is said that the anglo-saxon interpreters have a very high mechanical instrumental technique, what is true, but that they fail in their understanding the way of interpreting the Spanish music, that needs a special feeling. This is not true for Russell. This scottish musician settled down in Spain, has captured very exactly how to play Spanish music. Recommended CD not only for the people that loves to listen good music for guitar, but also for the beginner guitarists that want to learn the way how those compositions should be played. A Masterclass!

All that having been said, some of Albéniz' compositions for the piano transition to the guitar without loss. This recording sounds as if the music were written for the guitar. And David Russell does a grand job of making it happen. It's good listening.

Listening to a good deal of Albeniz on my car radio as of late and decided to buy the CD. Very well played and I believe this collection has the minuet for Sylvia..in which, if you listen closely, you can hear the leitmotif for the samba in the music written for Black Orpheus (1959). A true classic artist played by another.

Excellent recording. David Russell's interpretation of the Albeniz works are different from the classic recordings of Julian Bream, and create a slightly different mood. Technically, Russell is wonderful.

I have long been in love with Spanish piano music, and this album introduces transcriptions for that most Spanish of all instruments, the guitar. The effect is a very Spanish charm, intermittently melancholic and joyous and above all, drenched in sunshine. If you want an infusion of the Mediterranean South, buy this disc.
