Great introductory book
I really like this book. This is for you who know basic japanese but struggle with essential grammar and syntax. The example sentences are really good, and the concepts are well explained. Here is an example sentence from the book:Ringo wa mottomo yasui desu.リンゴはもっとも安いですapples as-for cheap areAs you can see, besides the reading and translation, there is also the meaning of the word under each word. That way you don't have to look up in a dictionary when you encounter several unknown words in a sentence. The grammar is also explained in an easy way, lacking the academic hard-to-understand language of many grammar books. I'd say this is an essential book for beginners. Intermediate and advanced speakers may want to look elsewhere.

Great value
I have dozens of books on Japanese, but I really like this one especially for the price. It fits a nice niche, and has a nice set of examples/ vocabulary and the kana / romaji examples really help you focus on the grammar.

The BEST!
This is the best Japanese self teaching book I've ever read!I used to use Genki and I read that s*** 3 times and didn't learn anything about how to really speak Japanese.I now live in Japan and this book is really helping me advance.Nobody in Japan says things like 'dewa' so if you're using a Genki book, you need to burn that garbage now! and get this book.

Many typos
In intended content this is more or less the book I was looking for, though sometimes the ordering of contents seems less efficient than it could have been, and at other times the authors omit fairly basic matters as “too complicated” for no reason I can really accept. My biggest single complaint however is that in many places the examples are not properly edited. The issue is that in a number of places, including for instance the very first example in the book, as well as two separate times on page 94 (2 out of 7), the Japanese does not in fact correspond with the romaji transcription, which leaves me totally in doubt as to which version is correct. (The examples are limited, usually just one to illustrate each grammatical point.)My Japanese is not that great - that’s why I’m reading this book - so if I’m noticing these issues they must indeed be pretty obvious. Did nobody check this book for typos?

Damaged “new” book received with Prime
New or “abused “ book? This supposedly new book arrived obviously carefully packaged (with padding). Unfortunately the entire last section, “Spanish Verb Index” on pages 664 -680, appeared to have been torn loose and replaced with an extra fold (vertically mid page). It is usable but not the “new” book I was expecting.I do not wish to return or exchange it, though I do feel that I am due a partial refund.

Not User Friendly
This is a good book but it's pretty barren in the sense of interaction and common sense for the reader. It gives the feel that you should already have a Masters in English, understanding all of the technicalities of grammar, which is, in itself a language. He winds up not explaining something for what it is but rather how it stands as grammatical usage and why then it's grammatically correct. Not very user friendly I'm afraid, I sit here and try to understand what he's talking about but mostly just wind up yelling at the book for making things unnecessarily and overly complicated. Would be better used as a work book with two people or a group so that you can discuss what the author is trying to say. Good book, there's information in here it's just very cut and dry- like trying to chew an overly cooked piece of turkey without gravy. If there's one thing I learned here, it's that "Basic" doesn't necessarily mean simple.
