However, the new jets could fly at much higher altitudes and in much colder temperatures than propeller aircraft. If the heavy, bulky leather jackets became wet from rain (when the pilot walked to his aircraft) or from perspiration, the water would freeze at high altitudes, making the jackets cold and uncomfortable. Also, the new jets were more streamlined in design. Cockpits were cramped and filled with new equipment. Speedy, unimpeded access to and exit from cockpits became even more critical for safety. Rather than bulky leather, a sleek, lightweight yet warm jacket was needed for the new jet technology. To meet these needs, a new type of flight jacket was developed from the existing B-15 jacket, which was initially produced in cotton, but later produced in the same pattern but in high quality nylon. The B-15 had a wool collar with pile (a little like fur) carried over from the earlier B-10 that was found to interfere with straps in practice. Nylon had been discovered prior to World War II but it was not used in flight clothing until after the war, possibly because the demand for nylon for items such as parachutes consumed the available supply during the war. The first MA-1 jackets were issued around 1949 or 1950 to United States Air Force and Navy pilots and flight crews. Small numbers were also issued to Army flight personnel. MA-1 jackets first appeared in Europe in very small quantities in the mid-to-late 1950s probably on the black market and at sales of government surplus. Product not the same as advertised!
THIS IS NOT THE SAME PRODUCT AS IN THE LISTING OR DESCRIPTION. I DID NOT ORDER THIS JACKET, I ORDERED JACKET WITH ORANGE REVERSIBLE LINING. THIS JACKET IS PUFFY AND DOESNT FIT RIGHT. IT IS CHEAP CHINESE JUNK.

Nothing like the image. Cheap copy
The jacket looked nothing like the image, or matched the description. It did not have a heavy duty zip (as description), did not have an orange inside, and did not mention anywhere on the label that it was a MA1 bomber jacket.Just a cheap quality imitation.No response from seller when I tried to return.

Don't buy from this supplier
Firstly it is advertised with 2 inner pockets but has none,zip is poor quality and nor brass,colour is different to that in the picture,the material is much thinner than two other bomber jackets I own,and the size is completely inaccurate.I ordered a large as the other two I own are large and fit perfectly,however this one I can't even do the zip up, Return postage was so expensive I just gave it to someone two sizes smaller than me.To sum up this is complete crap !

Medium size came up very large from experience. Return postage was so expensive and they don't refund. Also picture can but little deceiving. Fabric is not high quality. So please read small print . Or if like me looking for a bargain with not a lot of cash, not reading the small print can hook you to buying it with almost a instant impulse buy!!

Massive jacket totally the wrong size
The jacket arrived quickly but the size is massive. We ordered a small and the jacket we received is huge it would fit a very large adult. The jacket was for my son and he paid for it himself so he was really disappointed. There is no label inside so there is no indication of what size it should be. My son wanted to order another one but I’m reluctant due to the sizing issue. The jacket is okay quality just massive.

Bad sizing
After reading other reviews I ordered a size down, medium instead of my usual large. The jacket was still huge, so big it made my kids laugh. The jacket has a very strange cut and I don't think a small would be any better. Seller would not take any responsibility and although they accepted the return I had to pay postage each way. Don't waste your time or money, avoid.

More than decent for the price
Brilliant for the price I don't know what some of the people who gave negative reviews were expecting it's a decent jacket for less than a score it fits well it's warm and yes the zip is a little cheap but c'mon it's well worth the money all day long.
