Returning to the Lakota Way: Old Values to Save a Modern World

Whole Lot More Than The First Thanksgiving
Wise and beautifully written. It made me realize how much I had missed in my education where Native Americans were reduced to the First Thanksgiving. Each chapter tells a fascinating folk story that illustrates an important value, one that I sorely miss and is badly needed today. I found the commentary in the author’s life following each chapter helpful in understanding a culture and part of our history that I didn’t experience myself. It’s a bit of a cliche but walking in another’s moccasins. I had mixed feelings about the commentary after the Wolf and the Raven. It made me a little uncomfortable because I felt vaguely guilty. Guilt is a useless emotion unless it produces change Unfortunately, we share a common humanity and no one is innocent beyond infancy. Anyway, I have found so much of value in Marshall's writings and so much to learn that I intend to read all his books. Highly recommended.

Another Great Book by J.M. Marshall III
Another wonderful book by J.M.Marshall III. For those who are not acquainted with the Traditional Lakota Way of life, this book-as all of Marshall's books- is a treasure for both those looking for the Truth behind all spiritual truths and the Lakota way of seeing and living all things as WAKAN-holy or sacred. Easy to read, profound as far as words can allow; those who use and see all things -even those who see only objects of nature- and how that leads to deeper and deeper in to spiritual truths of greater depth without belaboring anything to the point of either boredom or inattention. An excellent read and a great reference for those who are already "Traditionals". Highly recommended.

Another wonderful book by Joseph Marshall
After reading The Lakota Way, I am equally pleased by this book with its beautiful enthralling and very meaningful stories. They weave so much value while never minimizing what an extremely difficult world we live in and acknowledging the abundance of ignorance and pain we must deal with in our lives.

Native people love Joseph Marshall's books and so do I . Marshall and Luther Standing Bear perform a great service to humanity by recording these stories for posterity..the oral tradition is difficult to maintain these days and the heart of native thought and culture are preserved in these books.

A Tribute to his Ancestors
I have read much of Joseph’s writings. This one is so much more than a novel or colllection of stories. Joseph’s writings are a road map to Lakota tradition that rekindles a spirit that should never die and be embraced by all our lives

Amazing!
Everyone should read this book. Simply put it is a guide to live by and puts into perspective how distant we get from everything that is truly important in our lives.

Another great Book by Marshall
I have reading Joseph Marshall's book for just over a year. As a faithful Husband, Father and Student his story telling is a nice break from the push button technology world we live in today. As I prepare to move to the Dakotas to finish school, enter medical school and pray that I end up on a Reservation his insights are an eyeopener to the way the prairies were. There is simplicity in this book. Highly recommend.

Fascinating book about the Lakota life.
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and learning a little about the ways of the Lakota. We could all learn a lot from how these people lived.

The lessons, the Wisdom, the knowledge is there… those who care and have good-will in their hearts will benefit from those teachings…I thank mr Marshall for passing on the messages from the Elders…! They did their job… are we willing to do ours and save Mother-Earth and the race of the two-legged?

A return to quality writing yet again.
Joseph's 'The Journey' tale had me absolutely riveted to this book - Joseph is such a creative writer with great talent. Happy retirement to him and all his Lakota family.
