Really Cool but Requires Supervision
The media could not be loaded. My mom ordered this for my one-year-old son and I to play with for his birthday. It's been a lot of fun showing him how to push the buttons on the remote and turn the dial to make it go.Pros:It's easy to put together.Realistic sounds. No tiny parts for him put in his mouth.Big enough that I'm not afraid he'll break it.Made by Lionel so built to last and looks like a real Santa Fe passenger train.Cons:Uses batteries rather than power from the wall.He tried to eat the track while I was snapping together. Not really for a toddler so, needs full supervision. So, as long as I'm watching him, it's a cool toy for us to play with. I'm afraid he'll grab it off the track if I'm not paying attention. I was also afraid to put it on the carpet so, it's setup on his foam play mat. Maybe I'll get a table for it later?Would I recommend for your toddler? I don't know. My kid has only tried to grab it once and didn't hurt anything because I stopped him.I'd definitely recommend the Ready to Play sets for younger kids because they're tougher, cheaper, and bigger than O or HO Guage trains. I'd be really worried about him either breaking, or trying to eat an HO train.I may get him a Polar Express for the Christmas tree, once I've got him trained not to grab this thing from the track.

Some notes for non-train officianatos
This is a great set, along with the other great sets that Lionel has produced in this gauge. I've read a lot of the reviews here on amazon and realized that most people don't know that all of the Ready-to-Play sets were resized within the last few years. The old sets are identical except for the track width/gauge used to truly be G-scale. Lionel has their reasons, but they do make it clear on the new packaging that the new sets are not compatible with G-scale trains or track. If you have the older sets that do run on the true G-scale track, head over to ebay or other to buy the older sets that match the track and gauge. If you're buying from here or the Lionel site know that these are all the "Ready-to-Play" gauge, although not a standard gauge track, it is durable and very in-expensive to buy more. For being for kids, it's helped this model train lover have an inexpensive way to set up a train and have a good time. Always do your research when buying products like these, you'll get your money's worth, and make sure you go through Lionel directly if you have a issue with your set, they are busy, but they will get you the new parts you need. I hope this helps anyone with questions or concerns. (Also one note, the couplers on these sets are not the same as the Thomas or Hogwarts Express)

Great train, not interchangeable with other ready to play sets
We were excited to buy this for our 5 yr old this Christmas. He already has the Lionel Polar Express and Frosty the Snowman trains, and being quite the train expert, has been wishing for a diesel engine. It's a decent train. Stays on the tracks, the sounds are fantastic, easy to run, etc. Overall, I would absolutely recommend. A couple things that I noticed, and should be mentioned are:1) Not compatible with other ready to play sets. Though they are coupled the same, the tracks are set slightly wider. With the other 2 sets he can mix and match cars, and we were hoping (assuming, really) this would be no different. This is kind of limiting, but nothing that he seems concerned with.2) The batteries are different from the other sets as well. With the Polar express we purchased rechargeable batteries and that has been great. I see these 6 C cell batteries getting pretty expensive over time, especially since:3) The engine can't be used by hand, as the others can. With the other ready to play sets, he can (and likes to) pull them around the track without a remote. This set is not set up to allow the "dummy engine", and therefore, once again, limiting and greater battery use/expense.This is just information that I was wondering about before purchasing, and since it's a new train without many reviews, I thought I would throw the information out there in case it can help anyone. Overall it's a great buy, and my little man has been playing with it nonstop all day with not a single complaint.Hope someone finds this helpful! :)

Could not have asked for anything better.
So we have 'real' Lionel trains from the 50's that are just a little too delicate and advanced for our 4 and 5.5 y/os so I thought I'd try this out as an alternative that they would like.So far (12/21/19) it's PERFECT. It's BIG...bigger than I thought (yes, I know they list dimensions) and I was pleased about that. It also so far seems VERY durable and solid. The engine is quite heavy even before you put in the batteries. The track is a little challenging to put together for little (and big) hands but that's just reality. It also means that it doesn't not easily come apart. The control is perfect and i love that you can't overspeed the train to the point where it falls off the track. So far, they love it and I don't expect that to change. I just bought another set in the series and am on the quest to get more track (like apparently everyone else since all the track is sold out on Amazon right now!)Anyway, thank you Lionel for a perfect set that our young boys will love and I don't have to worry about them destroying or getting electrocuted! :)

So far... Soooo Gooood!!! and better every day!
It's only been here a couple of days... it seems most of the concerns come down the road... I we are not there yet... but so far GREAT . For this reasonable money this train looks and runs great. We have the Sante Fe passenger train... stays on track.. track stays together... sound effects are great!!! I will let you know if things start breaking down. ... a bit more ... Christmas season is over ... but lasts around here a long time. Meaning the train was up a long time and used A LOT!!!! Never needed new batteries, never derailed, track never came apart .... backward and forward away we went!!!! Sound effects were great ... we all loved it. My 2 cents ... truly I would complain if there was a reason. I have already bought additional track so next year we can create a bigger lay out! Thanks, Jerry
