Excellent book. Informative and just what I needed.
The book has a few typos and the layout and flow could be improved BUT!! Matthews more than makes up for this with informative content, his no-nonsense approach, his belief in the reader to achieve results and his passion for helping them do so. I've been strength training for 9 months now and am lucky enough to have a program and guidance that already follows the ethos in the book focusing on compound lifts and lifting heavy and I've seen great results. I've lost fat and gained definition all over, my body shape has changed (less pear, more hourglass), my butt is perkier than when I was a teenager and I've gone from not being able to do one push up to doing weighted chin ups. Not to mention the inner confidence that comes with lifting heavy as a girl. So while I can't say I achieved results because of the programs Matthews wrote in the book, I follow a similar one and I can vouch for the principles behind them.I ended up purchasing this because I needed more structure when it came to my diet and Matthews sets out exactly how to calculate your calories and fat/carbs/protein whether you're eating for fat loss, maintenance or building muscle but all with nutrition in mind and why. I love to cook and bake so the flexible approach to diet is perfect for me and the book gives guidance on how I can make my love for all things foodie exist happily and healthily with my love of fitness. I also appreciate the chapters on willpower and motivation as there are some really interesting psychological insights on how we self-sabotage without even knowing it and tips on how to overcome this.I definitely recommend this book for the theory covered as it's concise, refreshing and empowering. Matthews is also genuine and motivating. It's going to be challenging at times but put in the work and the results will come. Personally I would not have been able to start strength training from a book but I still wish I had read this 9 months ago. At the very least it will set you up with the right knowledge and mindset for the addictive journey into lifting heavy weights and feeding your body the nutrition - and treats! - it needs.

Very good advice
The book itself it's very good, super detailed and useful. I only have one problem in here: due to my lifestyle (I'm constantly traveling) it's impossible for me to follow the workout advice as I don't have access to the gym regularly and you can't get the results he claims by exercising at home. The nutritional part is complete and helped me a lot. I didn't need to lose much weight (my problem is toning and building more muscles), but since I changed my diet following his advice, I already lost 2 cm on my waist. Which is more than enough for me. Now off to build some muscles, too bad that I won't have the great results I would have had if I could use the gym.I will still apply his recommendations even if just using my body weight and a small set of dumbells I found at home (20 kg in total, not much...), but I'm sure I'll still see some results.Getting back in shape is all a matter of patience, perseverance, right nutrition and appropriate exercises, so this is an excellent book especially if you can use the gym, if not, use it as a guideline for your home routine and don't give up if you don't see spectacular results in a week. It takes time for the body to adjust to exercise. Be patient.

Impressively thorough
Over the years, I've read a lot about fitness and nutrition, researched and tried out all sorts of exercise, both cardiac and weight-training, experimented with all sorts of different ways of eating. I thought I knew quite a lot, and thought I'd found the ideal fitness lifestyle, but have been frustrated just lately because after an initial improvement I seemed to have reached a stalemate. Not just a stalemate, in fact; my fitness level and energy levels seemed to be dropping.I wanted to revive my enthusiasm and maybe experiment with a new variation on my gym regime, which was basically HIIT cardio three or four times a week, preceded by 30-45 minutes of weight training, alternating upper and lower body, lowish reps and trying to increase my weights each time. I was eating a healthy diet, averaging about 1400-1600 calories a day on most days, and nearly all healthy food - all homecooked.I saw this book, and all the good reviews, so decided that for less than the price of a Starbucks and a sandwich, I'd give it a go.So pleased I did. Let me stress, though, that I only bought it at a couple of days ago so haven't tried out the plan properly. However...a review on here should be for the book itself, not the outcome of the plan it explains, which is why I'm writing this now (before anyone points out that I'm jumping the gun.I can see the mistakes I've been making in my regime so far - I haven't been far off at all, but I need to make minor tweaks here and there, and a couple of major changes, and I can see that this should then work, or at least have a better chance of getting me to the fitness level I want to be at.It goes into really comprehensive - and understandable! - detail about what and why you should be eating certain foods. I'd had a little knowledge before so didn't understand fully the point of what I should be eating, but now it makes sense.Exercise-wise, again it's all extremely comprehensive and not only do you get the exercise plan, but you get an explanation of why you need to do the exercises, which ones you should do, when you should do them and how to do them - and it all makes complete sense! There are some reviewers on here who complain about all the links in the book, but ignore these reviews - the links are much better than any pictures as you can click straight through, see exactly how to perform the exercise, then come back again to the book. (NB for this reason, it's good to get it on kindle - I have a kindle app on my ipad which enables me to do this). This is the women's version of the original Bigger Stronger Leaner men's book, and Mike does his best to tailor it for us - however, if you're like me, you will need to work out how you're going to be realistically able to do the weight-training exercises. For example, at my gym, it's very hard to get near the free weights and the barbells because of all the men - a common problem for us! - not just because it's intimidating but because they do tend to quite literally shoulder you out of the way. I emailed Mike to ask him about using the exercise machines at the gym (which I had been using) and he emailed me back (Yes! He really does live up to his promise and reply!) to say I would be much better off using free weights instead. So be aware that you may have to either get yourself a home gym sorted out or look at following a bodyweight regime - which you can adapt so that you are able to do an acceptable version of the lifting plan. (You can find all this information on his website). He's a nice guy, very knowledgeable and dedicated, and enthusiastic. He seems to really know his stuff and I am looking forward to getting started...I am in my fifties now and the dreaded menopause is really trying its best to turn me into a sluggish lump, but I'll do my best to beat it.So give it a go - I think anyone interested in fitness should be very impressed and find it very useful. (My husband has just bought Bigger Leaner Stronger and he's off doing his workout as I write this...)

A very comprehensive and practical hand book to change lifestyle
I really enjoyed reading the book from cover to cover. I am especially happy about how logical, reasonable and long-term oriented Michael Matthews articulated about every aspect around the topic and even go beyond it.I would like to thank you for sharing your knowledge, thoughts and asking for opinions (chapter 36). My only suggestion is to add some contents and suggestions for people who have typical physical injuries or limitations, which exercises are suitable which are not, same as what your recommendations for pregnant women, that would be very helpful.

Love the book
I have read other books on fitness. Many leave information on crucial topics uncovered. But this book is very informative, covers all aspects of getting fit, lean and strong. Very well written. Enjoyed reading it very much.

Whether an expert or a beginner please please give this book a chance!
Okay so I just got the book yesterday and I'm already halfway through. no this is probably going to be a long review first of all the book is a lot thicker and goes through a lot more than I expected it to. but that's a very good thing a list of why this book is great for beginners and then I'll list off reasons why it's good for experts or people who are not new to the fitness realm. Why it's good for beginners.I have so many people ask me advice on how to get fit how to lose weight how to do this what to eat what to not eat and although I knew a lot of all the information already I just didn't know how to word it or had to help them some person that asked didn't even know what a calorie was which you know there was a point where I didn't know what a calorie was either. Well this book makes it very simple and makes it scientific reasoning and proof and understanding of what protein is of what a calorie is of what it does for your body of what carbs are. There is no lies or things made up to get you to buy more protein bars or protein shakes and he even gets down to the secrets of what's really behind all of the programs out there. The fitness industry does not want you to know these secrets because they're not secrets at all but the fitness industry has wanted to do nothing but make a money off of us so they make so many promises and half truths and use big fancy words and we get so many different advice and stories and sometimes they even contradict each other. This book digs deep into all of that so that you can understand the scientific truth to everything and to understand all that is a huge step. It will also help me know how to teach other people when they reach out to me for help because he wears it so simply and he sets it out step by step so that you can learn more easily and he validates everything through science so it's not just more information contradicting each other you know what's true and what's not true. so if you're a beginner and you're trying to lose weight get toned gain muscle whatever your goals are this is the ultimate book and I wish I would have gone at years ago because even though I knew a lot of the information already from doing my own research just as he did it was great to have it validated and to understand it so clearly. sometimes I yo-yo diet because I don't know what the truth is and where to go and I always learn something new and then this new program comes out and then they say it's the opposite of what I should be doing it's just all very confusing and I think we can all agree on that this book is not that. Please take a chance on this book and don't just judge it by its cover or read the first few pages read it from the start to the end. It will definitely be worth your time. Why is it good for experts?Okay so I've been a fitness junkie Fred I don't know how many years I'm also a recovered anorexic. Fitness is always been very important to me but it's never been more important to me than it is now for personal reasons so basically I knew a lot of this information already. But the reason why this book helped me so much is because sometimes even experts fall into the trap of a lot of the lies that the fitness industry tells us and we even pass it on to other people with good intentions. This book will simplify validate all the different things that you've been learning to know the exact science and to know exactly how it all works so you know exactly what you're doing and I do believe that they're even personal trainers out there who should read this book because you can also learn a lot on how to talk to people on how to motivate them it even has a section in the book on things that would help with having self-control and even explains the science behind the dopamine and your brain that you produce and release when you're craving chocolate and when you want that cupcake that's in front of you or that huge slice of pizza. And he's very real about everything.Another few things that I'd like to add that's great about this book is that it makes me laugh quite a bit of times he's definitely got a sense of humor writing this book and that makes it a whole lot less boring and yes there are times where it does get boring but you know what it's worth it. If you read this book and you put it into practice into your life you will never have to make another program you won't need supplements and yes you'll still get to have your foods that you enjoy but you'll also know what you're putting into your body how your body is going to respond to it. and he has a good portion of the book that's all about how to work on the inside of you and not just the outside of you because if the inside is not working too then it's going to be hard to keep working on the outside because it does take a lot of self-control especially when that dopamine in your brain wants you to eat everything in sight or want you to skip that workout.Almost everything you've been taught and all these programs and in the fitness industry and even on Instagrams are all a lie and a sham. And before reading this book like I said I already knew a lot of the information but I'd get so confused like what's true what's not true and so reading this really validated a lot of it sometimes I would see the title of a chapter and it'd be like oh I know about all this but then I decided to read it anyway because he really does get into the science of it he doesn't just share his opinions he shares facts.I'm actually a little jealous that I did not come up with this book LOL another reason why I wanted to read this book is because my goal is to become a personal trainer but I have a hard time simplifying things for people and I make it far too complicated and people just get overwhelmed so that's something that I really have to work on in this book is really taught me on how to do that too so if you're a new it personal training or that's your goal this is another good book to read as well but again even if you're a beginner at this book is awesome as well. Getting fit doesn't have to be so complicated. when you're first learning about everything it seems a little complicated and it seems like a lot when you see how thick the book is but then once you get the hang of it it's really not. But again I'm only halfway through the book so I haven't even gotten through the workout part of it all I've only gotten through a lot of the nutrition lies in the fitness industry the facts of fitness. And there are a few things that I didn't know that I did learn since I'm recovering anorexic I had no clue that it was a lie that my metabolism was broken after reading this book I learned that that's false your metabolism just can't break. It only slightly slows down even when starving and is very easy to repair.Just one more thing I want to add he does not sugarcoat things he says that the way they are even if you don't want to hear it. I bet there are so many programs in Instagram and stuff like that that can't stand this man for writing this book because he speaks the truth and they can't make money off the truth. the fitness industry wants you to keep coming back wants you to keep buying supplements want you to keep buying their secret special sauce and as he put it it's all hogwash! There is no secret there is only science and once you learn the science behind it all that's when you can really make progress. I can't wait to put this into practice and stop getting confused between all the different information that I've been getting because now that I know the science behind it all there's nothing that can stop me you can't argue with facts!
