Stardom Safe Capsule Raid 1 Protected Drive Enclosure for Time Capsule

Good unit with the raid one for protecting the data. Loaded with two 1.0TB Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 SATA II 7200RPM 32MB Buffer. The only downside is the 'noise' of the unit. Makes for a drag at home.

I tried several usb cabinets for my time capsule, non worked reliably. (kind weird, but true). Then I found this one, and decided to spend the extra $$. I can say that this cabinet works perfectly. It matches the time capsule footprint exactly, and even comes with little rubber spacers to allow for extra cooling between the unit and your time capsule.You just pop your drives of choice (I used a pair of 2tb drives) into the unit, plug it into your mac, format the drives any way you wish (you can turn off mirroring on the unit to run the drives as individual drives, or flip the switch and the cabinet does automatic mirroring) and bam. you're done.. pretty cool. I chose NOT to us the mirroring mode since I just don't trust the mfg.'s mirroring and rebuilding technology... It may be reliable, but who knows... plug it into the time capsule, and there they are... on your net, for all to use. Couldn't be easier.CONS: the noise. I keep my time capsule in a closet so its not too bad for me, but it this was sitting on a desk, it would drive you raving bonkers in a few mins. The fan just sits there shrieking 24/7. Seriously, if I had to have this unit out in the room with me, I'd be ripping it apart, and replacing the fan with a higher quality quiet model. (I thought that this actually wouldn't cost much, or be any real trouble. for giggles, I decided to do just that. I trotted down to my local fryes, and found a fan with the correct plug for 12 bucks. and its TOTALLY silent, with a much higher airflow CFM rating. now the unit runs totally silent, and much cooler.)the bottom line is, if you care about for factor, and you use a time capsule, this is your unit. just be prepared to replace that loudmouthed fan out of the box.Hope someone finds this useful.regards all.

I purchased this product a couple months ago and have been very pleased. Due to transferring a large amount of data, it has actually been connected to my Mac mini more than the Time Capsule but works great either way. This device has two settings, it can be set to a hardware RAID 1 (mirror) or JBOD (independent disks). I personally am using it in JBOD mode while using a software RAID 1 through Mac OS X. This works out better for me because if I moved the two drives into another enclosure or two separate enclosure the RAID 1 would still be maintained. I am using two Western Digital WD20EADS 2.0TB Green drives in it and they work just fine. There is no advantage in using high performance drives since this is USB 2.0 only anyway. Another great feature is that it has a built in three port USB hub. Essentially it has one type B USB port for connecting to your computer and three type A USB ports to connect other devices to. All in all a great product!
