Easy Install in Feefree Kayak
I bought this for my 13.5 FeelFree Lure kayak. It works very well. All you have to do is rotate the head around so the handle is in line with the propeller. It slides through sonar pod opening will tighten pretty well around the rim. It does not need to be real tight on the rim. I put it in and took it out a few times on the trip with no issues. The propeller will need to be vertical when putting it trough the opening and taking it out. You will need to have a rudder because it does not turn the kayak very fast since it is in the middle of the boat. I pretty much only use the first 2 speeds. Water tends to splash up through the sonar pod opening at too high of a speed. You will still need to take a paddle to help with fast sharp turns. I took it out for about 3 hours and the battery was still very strong. I put the battery up front in the dry storage compartment.

Nice trolling motor for a kayak
Old Review:I bought this trolling motor for my Field & Stream Shadowcaster 123 kayak, and I really liked it, but just felt it was a little too heavy for installing to the side of the kayak, so I returned it and ended up going with a more installed, transom mount solution instead. I do wish I had bought this motor for my canoe instead of the Watersnake brand that I bought, because this motor doesn't need the shaft cut. Although it may seem a little trivial, I like that this motor comes in grey even though it's saltwater rated (which is typically white).New Review:Okay, so my original kayak trolling motor prematurely died on me, so rather than wasting time and money returning it for warranty service, I decided to buy this Newport Vessels NV Series motor again. As you can see from the pics, I heavily modified it for my kayak mount (there goes that warranty). It's incredibly quiet and very fast. For the first test run I was fishing for ~5 hours, covering about 4 miles with the last 2 of the miles being at full speed returning to the launch. I have two small 35AH batteries in parallel and had 70% charge left when I got home and put the batteries on a charger, so this motor is really light on the juice. Although my initial impression was that it was a little too heavy for a kayak (and I still stand by that opinion for side mounting), it's actually fine on the stern. I have the batteries stowed in bow compartment (which is why I chose two small ones rather than one big one), so it balances out the weight nicely. I did add the Bullnose Rudder to it, and it provides an overall big improvement in tracking and turning. It's also nice to just use it as a rudder to provide a little steering when just drifting. Great motor -- works very well and looks good. I'm probably going to buy the same motor for my canoe and pick up the 36-lb version for other smaller kayak.

Saltwater rated motor for great price
Your browser does not support HTML5 video. Very nice motor for the money. That short clip is the motor on the 3rd power setting pushing my mom and myself on a 13 foot sit on top kayak. On the highest power setting it pushed us to roughly 5mph. Also I am using a small battery (30 amp hours) and after an hour long trip we still had full bars. Very nice. I’m looking forward to finishing up my foot controlled set up to have all day effortless kayak trips.Side note, I live in GA and if you put this on a kayak or canoe you WILL have to register your boat.

Detailed review
My review is a comparison of a different brand 30lb thrust trolling motor that this replaced.Old motor had circle shaped battery connector, forcing you to remove the nut completely to hook/unhook the battery. Newport has a prong that slips under the nut. Nut doesn't have to be removed (and accidentally dropped in tall weeds) to be removed. Small feature but ingenious.Old motor has 1 reverse speed that doesnt move anything. Newport has 3 reverse speeds. It actually moves the boat. Another plus. The pull out handle is sloppy and loose on old motor, is solid and feels good on the newport. The tilt feature is better on newport. Its a lever vs a pushbutton on old motor. Pushbutton is hard to find and clumsy to use.Thrust is more than adequate. I have 2 diablo 12ft stand up kayaks connected together into a pontoon. It is fully rigged with 2 people and 2 iced cooler chests. It left an 11ft john boat with 1 person, 1 cooler behind. The john boat had my 30 lb thrust old motor.Motor seemed quieter. I actually thought the newport was not faster than older motor. After i left the john boat behind, it became clear that my ears were judging the speed. The only thing i dont like is the battery gauge (5 led bars) dont turn on and off. It probably doesn't take much juice, but if i fish in morning, then fish in evening, i disconnect battery during shore time because the led's stay on. Thats the only thing i can complain about. I havent fully read the instructions so maybe it turns off and i havent found the method? The color/style is cool. Like a battleship gray. A nice change from typical white or black.

Great motor, fast tech. support
The motor is great. It looks good, feels good, and runs well. At power level five, my 14 foot tandem with an overweight captain and a 40 pound battery, moved along through a choppy bay at maybe four mph. Lower speeds would be great for trolling or going gently down the stream, but were a bit slow for my taste. Yet, even below fifth speed, it moved my kayak steadily and quietly, despite the elements. (See photo). Running at flank speed, I ran out of power in about an hour or less. Maneuvering up to the bow seat to paddle, I capsized. Fortunately, the motor is light enough that it caused no trouble in righting the boat. Also, the clamp was strong enough that it held the motor onto my 2x4 side mount through, embarrassingly enough, this and two subsequent capsizes. Clamps are details, and Newport Vessels paid attention to this one. If the motor runs after these salt water dunks, I'll update this review. So much for the motor. I sent an email to their tech. support on the motor's power led's. A reply came back so quickly that I assumed it was a boiler plate auto-answer. In fact, it was a direct, understandable, and documented answer to my question. So I'm very pleased with my purchase and will buy another Newport Vessel motor if mine has drowned.

These sell out quickly so never wait!
This is such an easy outboard to have on an inflatable dinghy. We are in the ocean, so having one that can be used in salt water was a must. We already had a large deep cell battery, so didn't have to purchase one for the outboard and it works wonderfully. So easy and a good speed at (36 lbs thrust) to use for transportation from anchor to shore. The company at this time is not shipping to Canada, so amazon.ca is the only source. The motor also comes with a battery relay which was an option in the instructions, so we didn't have to buy one. We were so pleased to replace our gas outboard with the electric trolling motor.
