The Best of Laurel & Hardy

A classic of rare early Laurel and Hardy films
This collection provides early Laurel and Hardy material going back to 1917, and includes information about those early years. As a fan of Laurel and Hardy, I liked this as a retrospective of their work and as a look back at early film making. There is biographical information as well. The CDs are tucked into the pages, this collection is made in a book format - good packaging idea! A few of the earlies: “The Sawmill” (1922); “Hard Boiled Yeggs” (1926); and “The Lucky Dog” (1921). Fans will be familiar with 1939’s “Flying Deuces” - the only one of these selections with which I was familiar. Included as well are photos, home movies and filmography. I would hesitate to describe this CD set as the “best” of the duo’s work, though. It does not include such gems as “The Music Box” and “County Hospital”.

Best of their solo ventures.
I got this set knowing full well that this was a collection of their solo romps and not their joint ventures, for that there is the difinitive collection. While many of them I previously acquired in another set, the picture was much clearer in this one, probably because they were able to remaster a lot of them. Also while still not a full length version "Lucky Dog" was more complete version as compared to the 7 minute clip that covered only the street and alley sequence on the other. My only complaint (and a small one at that) is "Wizard of Oz" which ran for 90 minutes had no music at all to it.

read the description - you'll know what you're getting!
The only caviet is that these are their individual movies, not Laurel and Hardy together. I knew this because I read the titles in the description. So please ignore all the lesser starred reviews based on that. Definitely ignore the review of 1 star for them being silent. Of course these are silent! It was the 1920s! This is a spectacular box set I was thrilled to buy myself, and I will delight in sharing it with my son the old soul, as my dad did with me.

If the movies are silent or talkies!
I love Laural and Hardy but I prefer talking movies than the silent ones. I did not realize this was not all talkies. Even with that, there was nothing wrong with my order. Thank you

“The best of Laurel and Hardy”...mostly Laurel or Hardy, mostly silent.
Let’s start with the good.1) packaging is awesome...love the way this set comes!2) The early short films of Laurel are good. They are silent films, but worth a watch. The Hobo is a good impersonation Charlie Chaplin by Laurel. Lucky dog is funny; the sawmill is ok and is completely silent. Mud and sand is a parody of blood and sand (a bit too long, but good (just cutting out the bull).4) at 16.95 this is a very good set for the price! The bad:1) most of these movies are either Laurel or Hardy. Or they have brief interactions.2) besides stolen Jools(was listed as a lost film until 1990), the flying deuces, the tree in a test tube, and utopia they are all silent films including some home media which isn’t really Cinema quality (even for that era). I like silent films to a degree, but since this is a“Best of Laurel and Hardy collection” I’d like to see more of their best and more of them together and more of them talking! This should be titled the history of Laurel and Hardy coming together! They actually did some very good work separately (mostly silent work).Overall I like this set! There are a few things I’d change! I’d change the name of the collection or I’d include some of their best work together! I’d put in more talkies. I’d change the name and include more silent era films to the History of Laurel and Hardy’s silent film era work and their first work together (and I’d include the movie “The second hundred years.” since this is listed as their first official movie as a comedy duo)!

Laurel & Hardy Collection
What'S not to love? Peanut butter and jelly. You know what's coming-- Hardy's studied despair at the camera,or Stan's rote muzzling of his Laurelic locks. Well, no one has ever hauled a piano up a flight of Los Angelessteps in beautiful black and white with greater marvelous inefficiency than the big man and his comparativelyslender pal.

Very happy with the product
I bought this as a gift for my dad. The book is really nice, and the CD's are tucked away in it. Nice presentation, plus my father has been laughing for hours watching comedy from his childhood. This purchase really fits the bill!

Misleading Product information
I was very disappointed in this dvd series. I was expecting to get "The Best of Laurel & Hardy" but instead got other actors in the various (mostly silent) films featured on the first 4 discs. Okay, so Oliver Hardy is in most of the shows in bit roles. Stan Laurel was shown only in the 5th and 6th discs! I was totally gypped!Take my advice and do NOT buy this dvd set because you will be disappointed like me.
