These are used in combination with solar vacuum tubes. This is just part of the whole heat system. You could up scale the amount and you could heat a pool with them.

Typically heat pipes don't function very well horizontal. The liquid in it has to be able vaporize, travel to the top, and condense again. (Thermo-syphon). They will work vertical better than horizontal but they work best at an angle of some kind. That's why you always see them installed at some sort of an angle. Hope this helps

the copper heat pipe is just part of a solar hot water collector. they are inside glass tubes that absorbs the suns heat then transfers it by means of the copper tubes to a manifold in a solar heating system. by them selves sitting in a tub of water they would not do anything. try going on "you tube" look up evacuated tube solar heater you should find experiments using them to heat water. may help get ideas on how you can use them and see just how they work.
