Q: does it have a automatic shut off

It actually does... It stays on for a LOOOONG time though, which is probably while other users thought it didn't. I want to say it will stay on for at least 20-30 minutes before shutting off. There have been times I have forgotten I plugged it in and went back to use it and it was shut off.

Q: Just got this flat iron. Is there supposed to be a gap between the plates? Mine has a progressive gap which widens as you move toward the handle.

I'll check mine when I get home, but I think there should be a very slight gap that widens toward the hinge. When you pass hair through it, it will fill the gap and result in a uniform "sandwich" with a very thin filling of hair. If it were completely flat, plate-to-plate, when you put your hair in, there would be a progressive gap widening toward the tip because of the hinge, if that makes sense. Think of hinging two rulers so they lay flat against each other, then try to put a row of pencils (your hair) between them. You would have to widen the hinge by a pencil thickness (so closed it would taper down to nothing at the tip when empty) so that all of the pencils were touched by both rulers when it closed around them.
