Q: I've been sent one by my cell phone provider but cannot see how it works! Do I need to charge it first, should a light show & how do I charge a phone?

It should have come with a usb-a to usb-c cable . You can charge it by plugging the usb-c end of the cable into the usb-c port and the usb-a end into a socket adaptor. You can charge your phone by plugging a cable into the usb-a port on your power bank

Q: Is it suitable for iphone xs please?

I am pretty certain it is I use my for an iPhone and iPad, also powers a Samsung Galaxy good all rounder. I also purchased one for my Son to use not sure what phone. Good buy recommended on the Apple uk site.
