I bought these beans to make my own baked beans so that I'd know what has gone into themThe packaging says that they do not need to be soaked overnight so I followed the cooking instructions. After the initial boil followed by simmering for over an hour they still had too much bite for my taste. I left them in the cooking water overnight and by the following morning they had absorbed more of the cooking liquid and had softened a little more. With fried onion, garlic, paprika and tinned chopped tomatoes they made good baked beans.I still have half the bag left and, when I make the next lot of beans, I plan to soak the beans overnight with a small amount of baking soda. Having read up on cooking beans, the baking soda should make them a bit more 'mushy.' I'll update this review when I know how that works out.I will buy these beans again.

For beans to soften they need to be relatively “fresh”. I soaked these beans in bottled water to ensure that the hard water in the U.K. would not impact them. They still have a crunch to them even after being cooked long enough that they have split. I was hoping since this brand sells on Amazon that it would have enough turnover to ensure relatively young beans. Unfortunately that does not seem to be the case. I will not be wasting 24 hours of intense cooking on this sellers beans again.
