I don’t know the answer to this. However, because you don’t put it in your mouth I think your ok. I still use mine occasionally, they are not sticky or brittle seems to hold up well.

Hello Amy, Yes, it will work on your 5 year old - start with the Yellow FlexEx (it's the softest). Because of the size of her fingers it might be necessary to simply loop the loop on each Finger over the finger twice.
