Sarah Brightman - La Luna (Live in Concert)

The big plus to this DVD is the addition of Josh Groban!
Being a true Josh Groban fan (Grobanite), both me and my husband; this is coming home to us, more to see Josh and hear him sing with Sarah, than just Sarah alone. We bought the DVD of "One Night In Eden" and I don't care what anyone says about her lip synching or not doing it; it was so definitely lip synched in "One Night in Eden," but I am willing to try this one as we love Josh and we love this song with the two of them. I do realize he was so new to the business but I understand Ms.Brightman was given the opportunity to sing with whomever she wanted and she asked for Josh, as she had become aware of his voice and really thought it was fantastic. That was then and now, he is going on 26 and no longer just "the kid" who sings on this DVD. His voice is richer and he does sing so much in foreign languages, therefore if you don't like him or consider this a silly reason to buy someone else's DVD.. perhaps it is, especially after the disapointing One NIgth in Eden but right now all the Josh fans are going through withdrawal from Josh being in the studio cutting a new CD (hopefully, also a DVD) and it will be wonderful to be able to see him perform again with anyone at all. It's a real Josh Fan dry spell, right now. I think Sarah Brightman has a wonderful voice and it is very angelic to listen to. I have a harder time adjusting to all the theatrics she feels she must do to be entertaining. The flying is "over the top". There are special effects and then "over effects" and that was very present on the EDEN DVD. It appeared she actually was singing, without lip syncing on the Phantom series and she sounded just wonderful. She really doesn't need to have all the extra remixing, but to see her do an entire show using her own voice and not a voice over would be so great! The Phantom of The Opera part of EDEN was the best and then, there was the other, with all the flying around again. It may be that her corset was so tight, she could not possibly have sung through an entire concert just using her own voice, thus she absolutely had to use the "premixed sounds" of herself. I haven't seen a corset so tight since "Gone With The Wind" and she seemed to be trying to become Scarlet's size in the waist and sing on top of that; not be an easy task for anyone! I have read EVERY comment and I am really hoping we will enjoy this one so much more than EDEN, as her talent is great and I would love to really see it displayed to the full extent of how well she can actually sing. That wouuld really be nice to see and hear! I also realize this is just my own opinion as there are so many huge Sarah fans out there and they are just as rabid about her as we feel about Josh. Hopefully, this will blend a beautiful concert to really enjoy, unlike EDEN. We are looking forward to getting this new DVD and really enjoying it! selketsnow

voice and imagery
At its gentlest and most natural, Sarah Brightman's voice is the lullaby of sunlight through a canopy of leaves. Her low tones are as meditative as wind through a dark stone passage, and her highest trills are a rousing swim through a cold river. And she knows that such a voice is best presented through imagery. There are almost no clichés we've come to expect at concerts. Interaction with the audience is kept to a minimum; and she doesn't introduce the musicians or anyone else performing with her aside from duet partner Josh Groban. Instead, she assumes images of mystical female icons: Aphrodite in "Who Wants to Live Forever," a music-box doll in "Figlio Perduto," the Virgin Mary in "Nessun Dorma" and "Deliver Me," and a vamp in "Music of the Night." Only twice does she seem human: during "Moon River," sung close to the audience; and in her duet with Josh (the affectionate embrace she gives the baby-faced baritone at the end of the song is endearing). The song selection is very satisfying. I was impressed with how Sarah turned Queen's "Who Wants to Live Forever" into something epic. Her rendition of "Nessun Dorma" has breathed new life into the aria as a stirring piece for a soprano. I also enjoyed the reversal of roles she effected in "Music of the Night": it is now the diva seducing the maestro, and not the other way around. My only negative comment is that in certain songs, the lyrics are neither on a par nor in harmony with Sarah's voice or the show's mysticism. "Deliver Me," which she sings like a heaven-bound Mary above a rotating globe, has such casual lines such as `I know you're the one to pull me through.' She comes on stage after the third interlude looking like a dryad, only to sing of `cartwheels on the floor' and `drinks' in "A Whiter Shade of Pale." Such a voice, and such a production, deserves more poetic lyrics. But it is easy to ignore this. Just listen to this voice, and watch this spirited performer lose herself in her meditations.

After watching this video elsewhere, I liked the show enough to buy my own copy.
She has quite an affected style, especially her hand gestures and facial expressions while performing, but nevertheless, I enjoy watching her concerts. Perhaps her unique stage presence comes from having been a Broadway performer, rather than a radio artist. The costumes are simultaneously lavish and avant-garde, and some of the music is quite inspiring. The quality of the sound is very high, and the musicianship of all performers is outstanding, but the camera work and editing could at times be better. The choice of song order is a little distracting at times as well: from the costume changes and set pieces, it seems that this recording may have skipped over some parts of the concert, especially near the end. The song performed while Ms. Brightman is suspended by a flying harness is engaging, and she clearly had fun doing it.If you like her music, you will probably like this video. If you don't like her music, you almost surely will not like the video. If you've never watched her perform, you may be in for a bit of a surprise in terms of her stage presence.I certainly enjoyed this video enough to want to buy my own after Netflix "lost" their circulating copies.

Fantastic show, not treated so well by post production.
The show is fantastic, one of the best of Sarah's shows on DVD.I think that the sound is a little poor: the orchestra they had on stage could have been more clear and powerful on the DVD, even in the LPCM track the audio is poor. I don't know much about lip-synch, maybe a bad practice of the post production, in this DVD a lot of the songs have some differences from the CD, I don't think they were lip-synch.It could have 5 stars if the audio had a better treatment.
