Outdoor Classroom Benches
My daughter had to do a public service project a few years ago. She chose to rehab the outdoor classroom at our local elementary school. We used three of these 2X4 Basics Kits to make three 8-foot benches for the classroom. The classroom is near a stream and has flooded several times, carrying the benches downstream on a couple of occasions. The local boy scouts retrieved them and they remain just as sturdy and nearly as attractive as the day we finished building them. The build was a lot of little steps, but not difficult at all. One thing that was not in the instructions, but was a good addition, was adding a waterproof construction adhesive that was suitable for plastics and wood(available in any home center or hardware store)to all of the contact points between the wood and the plastic leg structure to help the screws hold everything together. I believe it has really helped keep the benches sturdy though rain, snow, floods and heat. We used standard pressure-treated yellow pine, and added a stain with wood preservative for a nicer color and some extra protection, but that is not really necessary if you like the look of the wood as is (or can afford redwood). All in all, this kit is great! With a little time and effort, you will make nice-looking and comfortable/functional benches of 8 feet in length or less. Highly recommended for basic, durable outdoor seating.

LOVE these
Really inexpensive way to make backless benches. We have limited deck space and I wanted to be able to seat as many people as possible for BQs around our 6-8 person table. I made 2, 3 foot benches for the ends, and 2-3 kids can sit on each. Then if I need to I can put the two together on a longer side of the table, or just move them around wherever. The wood cost me $10 total. So for two benches I spent $50. There is no way I could have gotten simple backless benches for that price. I did stain the wood dark blue, but you of course do not need that added cost. Making the benches is easy and fast, it does help to have a second set of hands just so the boards do not slip as you drill, but I suspect someone more skilled at carpentry might be able to do it easy peasy alone. I did need to drill pilot holes too.I only wish the legs came in even a small selection of colors, even just a darker brown. I read reviews online where people painted their legs, some claiming the paint is still on 10 years later! So I spray painted with apple green plastic spray paint, and it chips away with just the slightest bang. Oh well, it actually still looks goof, and that is in no way the product's fault. I just wanted to let people know that if they do want to paint the legs, perhaps a sanding and a primer would make it adhere better. I did the lazy prep route, that is to say, no prep at all!

Did just what I wanted!
I had a 30 inch space next top my entry stairs from the garage to the house and was looking for a bench to sit on to change boots in the winter, yard shoes in the summer, etc. Looking around, I could not find the size I needed, the strength I wanted or the cost was ridiculous for what I was looking for. Hey, it's going into our garage! I bought this and it was just what I wanted. I used two 4x6's and one 2x4 each for the top and cross brace. Get HD to set their saw up for the top and do all the cuts at once and they will be even. I used a paint stirrer from HD, cut 2 inch pieces and used two of them between the seat boards for ¼ inch spacing - quick and simple! It went together easily with just a power drill screwdriver bit. The screws were of decent quality - BUT REMEMBER TO PUT THEM IN AT AN ANGLE!. They are not long enough to go through the plastic and the wood, but the angle pulls the whole thing together. I DID NOT TIGHTEN ALL OF THE SCREWS UNTIL I WAS DONE SO AS TO ALLOW IT TO ALIGN ITSELF. TIGHTENING EACH SCREW AS YOU GO CAUSED THE BENCH TO BE OUT OF ALIGNMENT AND IT WAS NOT LEVEL ON THE FLOOR. WHEN I LOOSENED THEM ALL AND RE-TIGHTENED THEM ALL WAS WELL.I ended up with a bench that fit my space and functions just as I wanted. I also bought the workbench kit and I think it will go together even faster after I passed my 101 course on the bench! OH, I WANTED THE BENCH STAINED, BUT DO IT BEFORE ASSEMBLY. IT'S MUCH EASIER AND NEATER.

Sturdy bench legs, just add timber.
Bought this one as a birthday present for a friend, having bought one for my own garden last year. Basically what you get is the moulded recycled plastic legs. It's very easy to use a few pieces of 2x4 or 2x6 outdoor or construction timber to make a very sturdy bench. Mine is light enough to move around the garden to wherever we want to sit.

Simplicity with clean lines
The plastic material of the end-supports is light and looks cheaper than expected for the price. To make a bench or table you need to provide your own timber. I made a 4-ft long bench with 2x4 cedar planks. While the assembly is simple enough even without instructions, one needs a long bit (4") to drive the screws. The bench is fine and sturdy for adults and kids to sit on, but since it relies on screws to retain its shape, a strong push in the longitudinal direction would likely break the plastic flange at the screws--you would need diagonal braces between the bottom plank and the top in order to resist such pressure. In addition, it helps to use 1-1/2" deck screws together with stainless washers.

Good sturdy product (once you have added the wood)
Good sturdy product (once you have added the wood). Thought it could have been clearer that the inter-connecting lower piece of wood needs to be smaller dimension but v. easy to assemble if you have a local timber merchant to cut the wood. Looks like it will last for many years....
