Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass: The Story Behind an American Friendship

As an English teacher, I frequently taught excerpts from Frederick Douglass‘s autobiography: Narrative of the life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave. I have always loved the friendship between these two astounding men. It shows that respect and integrity transcend race, status, and any other social boundaries.

I purchased this book for a teen book club we created, and I learned a lot myself by reading it.

Good context of the thinking behind the relationship between these two great men. A warm relationship that the president’s wife even took notice of.

The reader gets a fascinating insight into not only the relationship between Pres Lincoln and Mr. Douglas but also into the every day functioning of the Government, the white house and the interactions between the two competing sides in the slavery issue at that time. The reader also learns, once again, about the true inherent leadership ability, love of total country and concern for all americans that President Lincoln had. Splendid as a primer for students and adults alike, this book depicts the moving story of the bond that came to unite two of the great figures of American history.

... and didn't realize their names were spelled differently.this is a fine book with glossy pages about Fred Lincoln, Abe Douglass and the deep, deep love they shared.

We really enjoyed this book. Good synopsis of the history of these Civil War figures. The book was purchased for a 9 year old history buff. Probably a little difficult for him then, but yesterday he told us he has read and liked much better. Also, they are studying this topic in school now, so that may have contributed. Would purchase again, with older child in mind.

I sent this to my son-in-law in England. I haven't received a response from him yet. I hope he is enjoying it!
