All You Need to Build a Shed with Character
I had a lot of fun building a shed for the first time and this book pointed me in the right direction every step of the way. I used the red Board and Batten shed as a guide and found that no plans were needed if you followed along and have some basic carpentry skills. I was building into a tight space so reduced it to 7x7 and added shake siding for more detail. Almost every chapter provided useful information, and I borrowed ideas from the other sheds examples in the book. What the book didn't help with was how slow I am, as many weekends as this took you would have thought I was building a house. Making matters worse, I constructed most of it at my house, loaded the pieces onto a Home Depot flat bed truck and assembled at one of my rental properties. I highly recommend this book if you are thinking of building a shed with a little more character than the ones you see in front of the big box stores.

It is a how to book that leaves you with questions, then shows you how to purchase complete plans
It was ok book, but it left out about 15% to leave you with questions. You have to either look it up on youtube or purchase the plans. I'm pretty good with searching stuff on youtube but it has proved to be difficult for exactly what you need. Buying the plans were something I tried to prevent to do to save some money. Might just purchase the plans but I think it's really shady of them to do that. But even if I do that, I didn't use a wood floor, I used a concrete slab. I am finding out that I need to put a waterproof gasket between the concrete and wood otherwise the wood will rot. I'm sure that won't be on the plans I purchase either.

Bad for instructions, good for ideas
Good ideas and pictures, but unimpressed from the standpoint of trying to use it to build a shed

Great great pictures and beautiful sheds
Love this book! The visuals are stunningly perfect to build using professional methods of construction. But......you'll still need a set of plans unless you are an experienced builder.

Phwoooar! Look at the purlins on that! This book contains full-colour photographs of sheds with their cladding off. Absolutely nothing is left to the imagination.OK, flippancy aside -- I wonder if this is a book for people who want to build a shed, or for people who like to look at glossy pictures while contemplating their dream shed? On the positive side, the photographs do demonstrate that the designs included can actually be built -- something that is often lacking in cheap and on-line publications. There's a lot of detail although, as others have noted, as a US publication some of the materials and fixtures will be hard to obtain in the UK. Some of the tools used are pretty exotic, at least in the UK. The terminology is American as well, but anybody who is contemplating construction projects on the scale of those shown in this book are unlikely to be put off by that.Although this book does contain detailed plans, it's much lighter on general design and construction guidance. It doesn't explain, for example, how to size the timbers needed for buildings of particular size and weight, or how to calculate the cutting plan for roof trusses of a particular size. It does demonstrate, in the specific designs, different methds of fastening and assembly, although there is little explanation why one method might be chosen over another. Moreover, the book assumes a pretty ideal construction environment -- an expanse of level, firm ground with a mains power supply and ready access for the delivery of materials. It also assumes a good supply of willing helpers. From my own experience, I would suggest that most of the designs are over-engineered for a typical British environment -- there's a certain elegance in framing a shed in 6x6 timbers, and perhaps that would actually be needed to survive winters in Colorado. I'm sure you'd get away with less robust construction in Surrey, for example. In short, this would be a good book for somebody who wants to build a (very) robust, elegant shed from raw materials, and wants detailed guidance on how to do that. It's perhaps less useful for people who want to learn about construction methods in general, or who need to work in non-ideal environments.

Fantastic book. Joy to read.
Read the first edition and learnt enough to build a 1.2 x 3 x 2.5m garden shed. This new edition features many new projects, specifically around timber frame sheds. Not traditional style, but using some fancy metal fasteners, probably hard to get in the UK, but still interesting to see him branching out and away from pure stick builds. What sticks out is the consistent quality of this book through the years and editions. Truini has passion, immense knowledge, and knows how to write well laid out and inspiring books. Best shed building book on the market.

Good book but be aware it is USA published
An American book which I didn’t realise when buying as a present for my husband but he was pleased and choosing between the differnt combinations of the plans included said he has come up with some useful ideas for his shed development!!! Just have to ignore the American terms!!

Dream sheds
Think the rest of the reviews have covered most of the points, some good hints/tips ,but the Haynes manual of garden buildings is far more appropriate for sheds and workshop, unless you’ve just won the lottery anyway 😩

Useful, but too much use of plastic sidings etc, but it is an American publication.
Useful, but a bit less of plastic sidings etc and more on woodwork would have been more worthwhile from my point of view.

Shed or dead
Great book, however would be five stars if it gave a materials list. Then you could phone a merchant and get cracking.
