Improve your knowledge
I found the material in this book helpful in developing some new styles of sax playing. These aren't particularly easy, but with a little practice, you can incorporate them into your bag of tricks.

Fantastic !
I have 3 Bob Mintzer etude books and this one may well be the best. First off the playing is impeccable and the music is more progressive. I've recently worked on number 7 'Straight Ahead' which appealed to me from a general listening standpoint but all the etudes are worthy of this great musical talent. This etude book differs from previous ones in that there was less preparation going into the studio. However from listening you would never know that. I guess when it comes to jazz sometimes too much pre- composition can actually hurt the final result. It also helps to be playing with a world class rhythm section. The way Bob improvises is truly a thing of beauty. I have never regretted buying any of his books. If you're gonna learn, learn from the best !

this is very good material played by top players on a perfect performance ...
After (as an intermediate player) trying to play along these pieces I gave up after a while - don't get me wrong: this is very good material played by top players on a perfect performance level, fine with me, but to cope with it is not easy at all and not very uplifting for a beginner or intermediate player (I may be just not talented enough though)...I feel intricate chord changes every half note at near tempo 300 is just insane as an 'etude' - and it doesn't even sound very melodic to me, even slowed down with Transcribe - sorry to say but it all sounds somewhat dated.I prefer Greg Fishman's less hectic / more transparent approach and feel less inferior and understand more when I play along this stuff.

Great learning tool
The book gives the player insight into Bob's choice of/ purpose for, each tune. He's also trying to impart the 'feel' of the music. The book provides a good basis for anyone on the cusp of playing fluid 1/16( semi-quavers) notes in their own solos. The recordings, both with soloist and without provide a good learning tool designed to bring the student up to 'live' speed. Certainly a good investment - especially if you listen to Bob's recordings with the Yellow Jackets.

Klasse!
