Not exactly what I was looking for.
My husband is a tolkien nerd. I love the quality of these books. They have a nice, probably faux leather cover, and good quality material. The only things I dislike about this item is the content. It looks great on a shelf, but most of the content isnt truly based on Tolkien's works, it is made up by David Day. So if that is what you're looking for, fantastic. That's why I gave it three stars, because that wasnt what I personally was looking for, but it wasnt all bad

Excellent Reference Work!
This is an excellent companion for understanding Tolkien's world. It'll give you a brief overview of just about everything with absolutely gorgeous illustrations. It's an easy read, and easy to go back and re-read certain sections as needed to refresh your memory on certain things. It doesn't go into great depth, but if it did it would be entirely too long. Great intro to Tolkien if you've read the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings and you want a little backstory on the world in which they are set.

Great feel to the book
Got this for a present but flipped through it before wrapping it. It looks really great. It does seem to talk a lot about different silmarillon stories rather than just the areas. However, the cover is really cool. It feels leathery and cut out in texture. Pictures look gorgeous

Unique embossed cover and different content than more precise sources.
Not a piece of informative reference. It has a new take on the chronology of the early ages. It could be a decent beginning book, had one not used atlases from other authors. Tyler's is superior.

Very disappointinig
This is NOT an atlas by any description. It is a collection of artwork from David Day's other publications with only 14 maps to be found within 256 pages. The maps themselves are very small and lacking in any kind of detail. The only ones of any interest are those on the endpapers but those are too small to be of use. If you want some pretty pictures and repetition of basic information then this is for you but basically it's a rip-off.

Not an atlas – hardly any maps
Given that the book is called an atlas, I expected it to be virtually all maps. Instead, there are a few maps, mostly vague and badly drawn; the one halfway decent map at the end is so small that it is virtually useless due to the small size of the book. It should be called something like A book of fan drawings, though anybody could find better fan drawings on Tumblr. Very disappointing and I will be returning it.

Calling this an "Atlas" is very misleading!
Just as the Oxford definition of "atlas" is "a book of maps", I bought this expecting that it would be just that. The nice leather-style cover aside, this book of over 250 pages has just about 15 maps. "Packed with full page maps" is grossly misleading, as there are hardly any full page maps (maybe 2-3?).Overall, this book looks nice and some of the illustrations are well drawn but it's definitely not an atlas - I sent it back.

Great Book - previously available under a different title
Great book with beautiful illustrations and serves as a kind of primer for the Silmarillian if you dont have time to wade through that! The only reason I have dropped a star is that this book was previously published as 'Tolkien, An Illustrated Atlas' so I now have two copies (or at least I have one copy and a gift for a Tolkien appreciating friend!) and the different name didn't get caught by Amazon's helpful 'You Purchased this on ...' warning. However, the previous (totally identical with the exception of the title as far as I can see) is now going for three times the price of this one so it is a bargain on that basis too!
