A prince, a pumpkin, a glass slipper ... history's most enduring fairy tale returns with a thoroughly modern twist! Beautifully produced and featuring an all-star cast, RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN'S CINDERELLA shimmers to life in the most spectacular production ever of the classic musical -- including three additional Rodgers & Hammerstein songs exclusive to this special Disney presentation! Pop sensation Brandy (TV's MOESHA) stars as the beautiful Cinderella, who suffers the torment of her wicked stepmother (Bernadette Peters) and spoiled stepsisters. Cinderella dreams of the impossible -- going to the ball and dancing with the prince. Her impossible dream is realized when her fairy godmother (Whitney Houston) teaches her that with positive thinking and belief in yourself, "impossible things happen every day!" Also starring Jason Alexander (TV's SEINFELD) and Whoopi Goldberg (SISTER ACT), Disney's sparkling new version of RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN'S CINDERELLA promises to be an instant classic. Now you can relive the magic anytime you wish! Review: About the race issue - I keep reading from time to time people saying oh it's not realistic because of the different races in the movies. Samantha (the previous post) even said that she doesn't know how to explain this to her kids. Is this a joke? First, there are millions of families out there that ARE like this! There are tons of families where the father could be white, the mother could be black, and they could have adopted an asian kid. Families these days are not standard, you can find every type of families. So it would be the perfect opportunity to explain that reality to your children and tell them that yeah people of different races can fall in love and that people sometimes adopt children. Also, this movie has such a positive message because its goal is to show that different races can live together and that we shouldn't even look at races because we are all humans and equal. For some people who are complaining and can't watch this movie because of the color, you have to look inside yourselves and ask yourselves why? I personally watch it and I love it, I don't even notice the different races, I see them all as humans. Also, another way of explaining this would be that this is a fairy tale, a fantasy. In the movie, there is magic, flying, tons of unrealistic things. Anything can happen in a fantasy movie including families from different races. So there are two different ways of explain it: 1. It's a fantasy anything can happen in it, 2. Adoption. Whitney Houston was behind this project as a producer and she should be applauded for this new refreshing take on this classic. It's nice for kids of all races wether white or black or asian to see themselves on the screen. The movie itself is very well done, the sets and visuals are stunning, all the actors did great, and the music is great. This is highly recommended! Review: A Classic! - I remember watching this on ABC when I was a kidlet, and dozens of time on vhs thereafter, so I was geeked to get my hands on the dvd so that I could share it with my own kidlets. Watching this again as an adult was a completely different experience. First and foremost, the diverse cast blew me away. To date this has to be the most racially diverse regency film ever produced (in America at least. I'm American so that is all I can speak on), even though it's been twenty years since this move came out! And even though it's been twenty years, I remembered nearly every word to every song. This is SUCH a good movie! The story is old and well known but what the producers did with it was just amazing. I found myself tearing up when Cinderella and Prince Charming were singing to each other in the garden. It was such a beautiful romance and if you've read any of my reviews then you know I love romance. I can't say enough good things about it. Just buy it and watch it!

About the race issue
I keep reading from time to time people saying oh it's not realistic because of the different races in the movies. The only Cinderella film that’s recognized in my household.
I loved this movie when it came out in the nineties, and I recently introduced it to my kids who now demand to watch it pretty much everyday. My 2 year old son sings The Prince is Giving a Ball at the top of his lungs randomly throughout the day and I have had “Impossible” in my head on a loop for at least a month. It’s the best Cinderella. There are literally no “dead” parts - I don’t know about you, but for me there is normally some section of every movie that loses my attention and feels like it could have been left out. This has none of those. Every scene is useful! The music is amazing, and now I can watch both streaming at home or in my car’s entertainment system on the road. Buy it! You’ll be so happy you did.

ICONIC!
By far still THE BEST rendition of the Cinderella tale! I was 16 when this came out and have tried to watch all others that came after and none of them hold a candle to the whimsical color and magic that this one provided. It doesn't matter if Brandy had any theatrical experience, her voice was perfect for every song selection. Her and Paolo singing together was amazing and still is till this day. Happy to know they came together again for the Descendants! Great movie overall!

Go watch this. Go watch this right now, and be prepared to melt into a puddle of goo.
Watching this movie is one of my earliest memories (yes, I just dated myself, whoops), and it's just as amazing now as it was then. The music is fantastic, the sets are stunning, and don't get me started on the costuming because it's brilliant on so many levels, from the opening scene where Cinderella and the Prince are the only people not wearing satin or velvet (no, seriously give it a good hard look. All that shimmer on the general populace is fancy fabric), to the split tulle overskirts on the ladies on the ball that are totally invisible until the music picks up, to the daisy hat on the flower seller. Bernadette Peters is as brilliant as she always is, and Brandy, while one of the weakest voices on the cast (as far as this particular genre goes, I'm not denying she's good at her usual sort of music, but Rodger's and Hammerstein's music isn't especially easy for people with buckets of theater voice training, which she doesn't have), still manages to pull off the sort of sweetness this part requires. Paolo Montalban is utterly charming as the Prince, and I'm sad he isn't in more film, and Whoopi Goldberg steals the show on several occasions. Is it campy? Yes, but it's a movie take on a stage musical take on a Victorian England take on a German fairytale, and it carries itself off charmingly because, not in spite of, this. If you haven't seen this yet, you've missed a gem, and you should stop reading these reviews and go watch it immediately.

My own mistake, I did not notice that this DVD is Region1 only. It will NOT play on a normal UK DVD player. However, it WILL play on my laptop. It is a very enjoyable film, excellent cast, very happy and funny. It is wonderful to see a mixed race family portrayed by the various actors and will delight all children and adults. My Grandaughter was absolutely thrilled to receive it and did not mind that she could not view it on a larger screen.
