Q: Can these be use for a bass guitar?

No, these are better suited for ukulele. Bass tuners are much larger, with more torque.

Q: It looks like the attachment screws are cylindrical, and not pointed wood screws. Is this correct? If so, why would anyone use screws that fall out?

The ones that came with mine had a point. If they don't come with a point though, just drill your pilot hole the size of the narrowest point on the shank of the screw between the threads, not the size of the outermost diameter of threads. Screws will not fall out when used in the right application and installed correctly, whether pointed or blunt tipped.

Q: How long is the shaft on these? I need ~1"

The center shaft the string is attached to is 1 inch long. The tuning machine was made to be mounted on a 5/8” thick peg head in a 3/8” mounting hole which is centered 3/8” from the edge of the peg head.

I used them for my soprano ukulele.
