Pretty Neat; Convenient Case; Not as pictured
I'm an amateur biologist so I ordered this kit because of the price and the case for convenience. It arrived faster than it said it would, and everything was in good condition (as in not broken). The only thing I wasn't expecting was that the test tubes were plastic (when the description says glassware and even in the image they look like nice glass test tubes with cork caps) and the dissection set doesn't come with a scalpel. That just seems strange that it wouldn't come with one but instead it has two pairs of scissors and three types of tweezers and two poking tools. I guess I'll just have to use the scissors if I ever want to open up a specimen or order a separate dissection kit. Also, the case that the dissection kit came in isn't the greatest. The material is that greasy, black material (the same material for the microscope case) and the only things keeping the items from falling out are the white bands you can see in the image, which the items slide up and down in with a lot of movement (say, in the field). It does have a button, though, and the bottom flap in sewn shut so only the top flaps open. I'm sure the material is mainly for protection against water damage, but it just feels really cheap. Also, one of the test tubes cracked at the top when I put the lid back on during my first outing so now I'm down one test tube. The image also shows some type of cleaning cloths (at least that's what it looks like under the microscope in the picture) and it didn't come with those. Everything else was accounted for. I've only looked under the microscope a few times since I already have one of my own, but it's pretty convenient and the light is bright enough.Overall, I think this product is a bit overpriced for the quality and quantity of the items. The dissection set is pretty good aside from not coming with a scalpel (stainless steel) but everything else is plastic (including the microscope and the slides that came with the scope; there are a few that came inside the kit that are glass along with a tiny packet of cover slips but some of those had cracked corners). The upside is that it is super convenient with the case that it comes in. I've taken it out a few times to gather some water samples and the pocket inside is perfect for a small notebook (it comes with note cards but I'd rather use a notebook) and everything stays in place inside the carrying case. If it was cheaper, I would suggest purchasing this set, but at almost $85 I would try and put together your own kit (There wasn't much else out there for an already put together kit). It might cost you a bit more to make your own, but the quality of your materials would probably be a lot better.
