INITIALLY SEEMED AWKWARD, MUST TRY TO APPRECIATE
Original REVIEW 2021/12/22 BLACK DIAMOND MITTEN REVIEW, ONE STAR FOR TWO REASONS: 1. TOO SMALL FOR XL: fit uncomfortably snug. 2. LINER NOT A MITTEN: Defeats the whole idea of mitten design; liner has separated index finger which is very uncomfortable causing a sore spot to form between fingers; there was no indication of this inferior design tradeoff in the images of the product description (NOT LIKE THE PICTURE!); I suspect that the manufacturer did this to be cheap and only need to inventory one liner for two shell designs. Come to think of it all of the above is simply the manufacture being ‘CHEAP’. Likely I will never buy their products again. I think I’ll order from Hestra per one of the reviewers suggestions I read. UPDATE 2021/01/06 I'm signed up to ski Taos with a season pass this winter and I need a warm backup to keep in my pack and on very cold days. Therefore, after sitting on the fence and reviewing all the other options I've decided to keep these. After toying with these I found one can fit all four fingers in the space below the index finger quite easily. Also, I have read some more reviews and have found that these likely are the warmest options currently available. I'll give them a try and am heading up as soon a the next storm blows through for a couple weeks. Hopefully Kachina will be opened more often than every other day. UPDATE 2021/02/01 UPGRADED TO 4 STARS Skied in weather between -8F to 20F for a few days. These were quite adequate. The review about their warmth is indeed quite correct. Also, it is possible to fit all four fingers in the lower part if the index gets cold while handling logistics. However, still only 4 out of 5 stars because I think these at this price point should have a safety strap like the Hestra gloves so as to not inadvertently drop from the lift. UPDATE 2021/0515 (upgrade to 5 stars) Put another week on them. They are WARM. Perhaps too warm at temps above 25F. But for most very cold days they are have been simply wonderful.

Pretty good, but don't completely prevent cold fingers
I have yet to find a pair of mittens or gloves that keep my hands toasty warm, these included. I usually forgo any hand coverings and just use my pockets, as that seems to be the only way to keep warm. That's not very effective for shoveling, though. Gloves usually act like a cooler, insulating my fingers in a deep chill. I needed to find something warm enough for snow removal, and Googled to find mitten recommendations. These were a top choice. They certainly sounded warm enough, and I was ready to pay the high price for that warmth. Sadly, they are not as warm as I'd hoped they would be. I just spent an hour shoveling, and the three fingers in the mitten area were quite chilled after just a few minutes. Oddly enough, my thumb and pointer were perfectly warm; I would've thought that the opposite would be the case. However, taking the mitten off and moving my unclothed fingers for a minute then putting the mitten back on helped. I was able to get through the shoveling without ever having painfully icy fingers, but would have preferred getting through it with completely comfortable fingers. Still, these mittens are far better than the several other pairs of useless hand coverings I've bought over the years. As for sizing, I'm a woman with narrow- to average-sized hands. I bought these in a medium and they fit very well. If I want to, I can keep my four fingers in the larger mitten area instead of keeping my pointer finger in its own compartment. But, given my experience of having my isolated fingers stay warmer than my grouped fingers, I'll keep using the separate pointer space. I absolutely love the strap at the end of the mitten that I can tighten over my coat; it tightens very easily, even when using a clumsy mitten-clad hand. You just pull and it tightens. Same with the strap by my wrist. Very easy to tighten and loosen. No snow got into my mittens. It didn't even threaten to sneak in. Overall review: better than many; worth trying. Even if I could return them after having used them, I wouldn't. Might not be the absolute best if you have fingers like mine, that are extremely hard to keep warm in cold weather. I don't know if an absolute best glove or mitten even exists for someone like me, but these mittens come pretty close.

Good purchase especially for price
Snow board in Colorado and took on a trip to Canada. Temps in single digits to teens. Worked well enough. Work good with wrist tightener and arm coverage and are comfy. Inside finger hole gives more dexterity which is nice. Finger tips may get a little chill when really cold but with any movement on mountain hands are warm and don’t notice, and stay warm. If anything on warmer days with movement My hands have been a little sweaty. Good purchase for the price point! Happy with gloves. If hands to get cold there is enough room to ball fingers into palm and to wear liners inside- with liners absolute warmth.

Keeps fingers warm in sub 15 degree Fahrenheit weather!
I used these BD Mercury mittens while downhill skiing in 10 degree weather. Just the mittens over bare hands was enough! I usually have those disposable hand warmers in my old mittens on a 10 degree day. I felt absolutely no wind against my hands even while skiing. This is a first for me as all the other "windproof" gloves/mittens I've had always fell short. I don't understand the ad copy "the most popular choice for year-round use." Year-round? Maybe they'd be good for swimming? Or golf? I wouldn't want to have these on in temps over 30, let alone the Summer. Comedy aside, these are the best hand apparel I have yet to use. I have a pair of all leather ski racing gloves that the Mercury's will replace on days under 32 degrees. The only con for me is there is no wrist leash; of which I find invaluable while working on the slopes when I need bare hands.

Good construction, leather palms, and good sized opening at the top. I've used these multiple times now in very cold weather of -15C to -20C and have found them to be very warm. They would benefit from having hand-cuffs to go around your wrists similar to the Hestra's. The clip to keep them together is plastic - and for this price it should be metal. Also, your index finger gets it's own space - helps with dexterity.

Received these gloves and they were way too big as they are clearly not women’s gloves as advertised. For those looking into these gloves, note they did not have the separate index seam as the new version of this glove has. Seem warm but very bulky.

I did quite a lot of research online and got this because of the rated warmth (I’m scared of the cold and I don’t generate lots of heat) vs the price ratio. This is ok for a day with the sun. However this is not waterproof. The seams are the weak link. I bought this for snowboarding in France a couple weeks ago (it was my first time). This does not have the loop strap so you might want to get one from Hestra or something (I did) especially if you ski or snowboard. The temps were -5C and this was still ok (since I was exercising and sometimes in the sun). I had another glove liner AND a wrist guard so it was ok for me. I didn’t really like the crab design for the inner glove but it was fine, good thing was that the inner glove didn’t come out together with my hand so that’s all good. The dexterity isn’t that good as stated in online reviews. Unfortunately I don’t own any other mittens nor did I try any so I can’t do much comparison. I will probably upgrade to a better one next time. Ask me questions if you want to.
