Vostok company story starts back in 1942, when one of the Moscow watch-making plants has been evacuated from Moscow to a little town Chistopol located on the Kama River. Defense equipment was the only company output during war years, but as soon as the war was over Vostok started to make mechanical wrist watches - the main production item ever since. In 1965 Vostok company was appointed an official supplier of watches for the Defense Department of the Soviet Union. This year marks the creation of the world-famous "Komandirskie" ("Commander") watch. Military watch grew very popular even with people who were unaware which end of the gun bullet comes off, mainly due to high precision, excessive reliability and durability. The appearance of the watch also contributes to its appeal - functional and clear-cut design invoked the feeling of belonging to the tough world of combat professional. The experience which Vostok gained through development of the army watch was the foundation of our next special watch - "Amphibian". This impressive timepiece in stainless-steel case endured the depth of 200 meters - kind of a wrist submarine. Success of the professional watches determined the company's present philosophy - to create mechanical watches maintaining precise timekeeping at any temperature, in any environment, surviving heavy pressure and blows. The viability of the chosen strategy is now time-proven. A vast multitude of people both in Russia and abroad boasting "Vostok" watches and various international prizes awarded for high quality and commercial success testify to this. In 1996 Vostok started a partnership with US "Capital Trading" company aiming to create a new generation timepiece.

Exceeds expectations
Pretty good value considering it's an automatic watch that doesn't have many surface finishing flaws or overall sloppy feeling. Lots of charm and very interesting to have the legacy of vostok and the Russian army being shipped from Russia to your door.

Beautiful Time Piece;
Just picked up this watch as a gift, the pictures do not do it justice. I did wind it to ensure that it works, it responded with a satisfactory tic-tic-tic. Time will tell how reliable and durable this product is so I may re-visit this review in the future but at this point the product exceeds expectations and arrived ahead of schedule. This item was well packed and the padded container was postmarked in Moscow with beautiful Russian stamps. How cool is that? We're wrapping it in this packing . Hopefully, the recipient of this gift will get the same thrill from the stamps and postmark that I got.29 Jan 19 ; I am updating this review and adding a star. This watch was given as a gift, it went over quite well, and is rendering daily and perfect service to the new owner. This watch is definitely worth a 5 star rating!

Distinctive, but I have a couple small reservations...
This is only my second automatic watch, the other being an AVI-8 Sport model (which I can't even find on a search now). I don't have much experience winding watches the old-fashioned way, and since the AVI-8's been a regular in my line-up lately, I thought a second automatic was in order to help expand my horizons. Enter, the Russian Vostok watches, which caught my eye both for their military style and simplicity and also their prices, which ranged from about $40 to $90. I liked the face of this watch, and the band options were intriguing.I had two disappointments when I received the watch -- even though I knew the size of the case and that it's a bit on the small side, I didn't expect it to look quite this small on my wrist. I'm burly and at first glance it looks like a child's watch on my wrist. Because of this, the distinctive red and black NATO band looks narrow and also too thin (flimsy). I knew the watch's size (it was clearly listed) but a couple more millimeters would have resolved my issue. I plan on changing the band to something beefier, though still NATO style. Fact is, I do like the watch and I am considering adding a second, but I am scouting one with a larger case (and face). It seems they all run small. I don't always need Invicta size, but 42-44mm would be an improvement over the 39-40mm (18mm band) of this model. The largest I've seen in this price range are 41mm and 42mm. On the other hand, I love the simple black face, the crisp white and luminescent numbers (12 and 24 hours), the bidirectional bezel (though it's stiff turning and without the more familiar clicks), and the watch's Russian pedigree. It's true that there isn't a crown position that allows you to flick through the dates, however there's a trick (it's in the instructions and elsewhere in the reviews) that makes it almost as simple to change the date -- you just rotate the time past midnight and then back to 8:00 and back past midnight, and the date flips after the past midnight stop. Hard to describe and sounds complicated, but it isn't. It's another of those features that make the watch seem as old school as it is.I admit that the winding stymied me for a couple weeks. The directions are clear enough in both English and Russian, but I couldn't seem to position the crown correctly. The watch kept stopping and I was thinking of returning it. At this point it was a 2 or 3-star review in my mind. Then all of a sudden one day I was trying it again and I found the sweet spot. The crown is very loose, as it is supposed to be, when you unscrew and pull it out to its different positions. I simply hadn't yet found the exact spot where the crown engages the mechanism. Once I found it, I've kept it running by winding it once daily unless I'm wearing it, which then keeps it wound. Now I can't NOT find the right winding position, go figure. Knowing there was nothing wrong with the watch, I immediately reassessed and I now see it as a 4-star product, losing a star due to my issues with size (which you may not share). The box is really not presentation style -- the watch is packaged more like a large candy bar in a long thin cardboard box with Russian text on the outside. Keeps the price down, so that's not an issue (unless one were seeking a "giftier" look). All in all, it's an interesting timepiece on your wrist that runs well, has a distinctive look and history, and allows you to add a few other models without breaking the bank.PS: I did change the band to a black leather NATO and the watch looks a lot better to my eyes. A Watch You Can Love at a Price You Will Definitely Love!
I just wish I was wearing my new Komandirskie Mechanical Watch so I could take a picture to post, but in any case, I found my newest Vostok (I also have a Komandirskie Automatic that I really love as well, and a Scuba Dude on order), to be in all respects a most satisfactory purchase. It looks great on my wrist (I don't hold with the the critics who say these watches are too small...the big watch fashion never caught on with me), it keeps time as accurately as I need it to, keeps going for at least a full day when fully wound, and is as affordable as one could ask for. The lume is not brilliant all night but quite adequate, and this happens to be one of the watches I like to wear to bed, so that's a factor, but not a major one. And oh yes, the price...I don't think you'll find a comparable watch at a comparable price. If you insist on a big honkin' watch or something with more more bling, move along, nothing to see here. If you want a nice, attractive, affordable and accurate watch with some history, grab one of these...you can't go wrong and I think you'll be pleased!

Russian made and tough
I've got quite a collection of high and mid range watches and to be honest I didn't expect much from this Vostok. I was shocked how nice of a little watch it is!!! keeps time, lightweight, and can stand to be knocked into things here and there. The band is around 18mm which is tiny to me but wears well with the case size.

Great watch for the money
The only thing I don't like this watch is also a problem with some other Vostok watches, they tend to put the "made in Russia" text along where the indices should go. So between 25 past the hour and 35 past the hour, there are no minute indices. Why not put it above the indices, or just leave to text on the caseback?! Otherwise, I love the look of the watch, the size is right in the middle of being perfect. It's reasonably accurate and it is rather water resistant, with the screw down crown. Highly recommend. There aren't many manual winding watches out there that don't cost a fortune.

Awsome watch for the money
Love the watch the band width is only 18mm a little narrow not self -winding/automatic you will need to keep it wound so as not to lose the date because you half to wind through the hours to set the date doesn't have a pull out level on the crown. It's a modern made, old school watch.I like the watch its unique, and though do some research on the vostok brand you'll understand more about the watch.

Good watch for the money
Nice watch for the money spent. I like that it doesn't try to look like anything else and has it's own look. Mine is about 30 seconds fast each day so not too bad for a manual watch. The NATO strap is nice and is wearing well.

Good value for dollars spent.
If you want an affordable mechanical watch, this may be the best game in town. That said, it is good looking and seems to be of good quality. I've had it for only a short while, so I can't comment on its durability. The winding is a bit different. You'll have to refer to the original listing or other internet info as there are no instructions but it's not too difficult to figure out. So far so good. I'm enjoying its old school feel.

Great mechanical watch
For the money, it seems you are not able to find a better solution.Build quality is good. Accuracy is good (so far so good, have them less than a month).Would I recommend it? - Yes.

Fantastic value!
This is a solid watch. The case is solid and winding the watch (by unscrewing the crown to the 2nd position and turning clockwise) was no problem once I got the hang of it. The only thing missing (just a small quibble) is that the watch does not have a quick-set date. Other than that, I am very happy with the watch.
