Makin's Professional Clay Tool Kit

We bought this set of tools for our brother in law for Christmas as he'd recently become a potter. When his daughter asked what he'd like for Christmas he showed her this set of tools. She bought him something else and he was hurt. It was one of the few things he'd asked for. Praise the Lord, I didn't know any of this until Christmas day when we gathered for 'family Christmas'. He's been our brother in law for over 20 years and when he opened our gift he got up and came to hug me - first time EVER that he initiated a hug! (LOL, I'm not his favorite person in the world!) His hug literally made my Christmas which was wonderful already. I try really hard to 'think' about the person and suit the gift to their personality, hobbies, likes, etc. Evidently (with the Lord's help), I got it right this time.He's told me he's very happy with the tools, that they are 'good' tools, and now he can make any designs he wants and do all the other necessary parts of making pots, cups, masks, pitchers, plates and platters!If these tools made him happy and do the job, then I'd imagine they'd do the same for you.(by Richard's wife, Deb)

As a ceramic artist, I anticipated tools to work with stoneware. This tool set appears to be of good quality, but may be more appropriate to work with silver clay to make small precise imprints and texture designs in silver clay. Nice tool set, but perhaps better used in a different field of work.

I'm a beginner potter and I have to say this kit looks great. I haven't used it yet, but the minute it arrived I knew it was going to be awesome to work with. It's well-made/constructed and the options are endless. I love created textured pots and I can see this tool being amazing for this (not just for slab or hand-building)! My brain is already working overtime with how I plan to use these amazing tools. No, it's not an absolute necessity, but if you like adding texture, incising, piercing, marking, stamping, inlay, sgraffito...on and on then this toolkit is a must-have!

The tools seem pretty good, will edit once I've used them. The packaging itself is a bummer. The plastic that the tools sit in is cheap and bends easy, it won't last. There is a storage box underneath the tools that has little slots and dividers that let's you choose how big each little storage square is. Cool!... But putting even one divider in makes it so the plastic part the tools sit in doesn't fit and the lid won't close. Not cool. Obviously no real thought went into making this. I hope the tools are worth the money because the box they come in isn't worth anything. I now have to find a new way to store them.

Lots of cool stuff here, but the box is not good, with two latched almost impossible to open. Many of the included items are engineered to a very low level, such as the three wheels--they wobble badly on their axles. A good thing not mentioned is the 'pens' are double ended, both ends threaded for attachments, allowing you to have two double ended tools. The flat spade is the most useful attachment. Textures are only moderately useful.

Don’t hesitate, just buy them! Such a lovely and high quality stainless set for potters and hand builders. Just got them a couple of weeks ago and they are my “go to” tools already-I almost could give most of my other tools away that I’ve accumulated over the years. Great storage box. I feel like a professional.

Purchased this kit as a gift, and my friend was delighted with it. She's recently started experimenting with designs and this kit was the perfect stepping stone for her to decide whether or not this would be an artistic path she'd enjoy -- without braking the bank or investing in tools she might not have later use for. The quality is good enough to make effective use and practice techniques she might want to develop. I recommend this kit as a proverbial stepping stone in any potter's journey.

I can find household items to create half the textures in this kit. And a few seem to do exactly the same thing only a millimeter shorter line, for ex. This would be a good investment for a beginner - someone who is trying to purchase a wide range of texture, cutting, and sculpting tools for a reasonable price, and still expects good quality- not the plastic tools for sale in some stores( though those actually work quite well for some applications with polymer clay)- arrives all neatly organized with its own reusable plastic box with extra plastic dividers to create it in a way pleasing to you ergonomically.Even provides a useful cardboard sheet listing each part and possible uses and illustration of its effect and how to use tool to creat said effect. I am happy I purchased it, just wish it was among the first investments I made rather than finding out that I had collected many of the tools over the years individually all ready. I plan to use it when I travel to teach classes- it is compact. convenient, and very good quality.
