Perfect for an 8 Year Old Prior to His First Visit!
I bought this for my nephew, as we are planning a trip to Scotland this year and he is always curious about the history of places and the culture of the people. How to distill so many centuries of history in a way he could grasp and remember?? I took a chance on this book, and it exceeded my expectations. It is written comic-book style so the pictures grab his attention, and it gives a very good, broad overview of the history of Scotland and its various peoples. Nephew is sneaking in a read every morning before school--he's fascinated and likes the book very much. We'll take it with us when we go so we can look up facts on the spot. Highly recommended for kids about his same age.

History of Scotland
This is an excellent book and provides historical facts about Scotland in a child friendly way. My 7 year old loves this book and I have also enjoyed sharing it with her. Richard Brassey and Stewart Ross have come up with a beautifully illustrated and well written book that will spark your child's imagination and allow them to learn lots of great things about Scottish history. This is a great addition to our book collection.

Interesting and informative
Nicely done. Cover is wipe-off and since the style is like a comic book of sorts,it should be written to and for children. Liked it overall but the pages seem a bit full and the levelof reading required higher than expected.

Scotland in a Nutshell
This book covers a vast amount of ths history of Scotland in a light hearted and sometimes humorous way.Since I am originally from Scotland I appreciate the fact that the events listed in the book are authentic and show that this small country has produced many remarkable people.

Fun!
For older kids or adults, as it's a bit wordy (not in a bad way) and is frank about Scotland's rather bloody history. I enjoy the "cartoon guide" type format of books and have appropriated this book off the kids' shelf to my own for the moment.

A Wee Bit of Scottish History That is Charming and Funny
I bought this as a present for the daughter of an American friend who is current passion for the UK. She's only eight but is very interested in almost everything. I previously sent her Richard Brassey's book "Nessie" which she adored, so I figured this book would suit her as well. The problem was that once I received it and read through it myself, I didn't want to give it up. It is a great way to introduce Scottish history to almost anyone. It is concise and straight forward with quite a few funny bits.

Easy-to-read basic history!
Just before travelling to Scotland, I wanted to get some background info. For anyone who has tried to decipher Scottish history and all of the clans and rivalries and comings and goings, this book was really a great simple way to get the basics. I had also bought several detailed books to read prior to my trip, but reading The Story of Scotland first just pulled all of the names and places together in one cohesive version that worked out perfectly for me, so in reading the other books, it was more of an aha! than a Who-on-earth-is-this-again? (since so many of the more recent characters have multiple titles and, hence, multiple names).Of course, I am a timeline-friendly type of gal. And, on the plus side, my 10-year-old son picked it up and read through it, too!Well done!
