Capernaum, a new film by Nadine Labaki and winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, follows Zain, a gutsy streetwise child, as he flees his negligent parents. He survives on the streets through his wits while taking care of Ethiopian refugee Rahil and her baby son, Yonas. After being arrested and put in jail, Zain finally seeks justice against his parents in court for the crime of giving him life.

Speechless...heartbroken
I really don't know what to write. It's a gorgeous, well made, expertly performed film, but I'm so sad and heartbroken and speechless about the possibility of this being even 20% realistic. What savagery humans are capable of. And as much of a dump the US has become in the past couple years, thank G-D we're not (yet) any part of the world that treats humans and children with such disdain and violence and neglect*. I'm truly shocked by this film.*Edited to take into account what's happening at our borders and to our minority citizens.

Outstanding film!
I'm no stranger to foreign films, and I often am pleased with the offerings, as Hollywood fails again and again to reach a more mature audience. This movie "Capernaum" resonated deep inside of me. It is not a movie that I would call intertaining, but disturbing. It dealt with poverty and over population in one's own family. It dealt with some of the crushing consequences of emigration without documentation. You not only feel the burdens of the young male hero in this story and marvel at his tenacity, as each day of his young life is a constant hustle for survival, but I found myself empathize for his mother and father as well. I'll leave out any mention of the great tragedy in this film, so as not to spoil anything, but for those who aren't afraid to "travel" to otherwise less desirable destinations in the human story, I am recommending this movie, as it made me realize that even my own humble one bedroom apartment makes me very wealthy by comparison.

An extraordinary film that goes straight to the heart
Probably one of the best films I’ve ever seen. Zain (not a real actor in real life) plays the part of a 12-year old boy who lived in the slums of Lebanon. His parents have no values, but he instinctively knows right from wrong. He is imprisoned for stabbing a man in an act of revenge and his story is revealed as he stands firm in his beliefs and reveals the side of humanity that he wishes to preserve. It is a beautiful, thoughtful film that will forever remain in my heart.

Best of the Best!
The foreign films slated for the Oscar this year were all masterpieces. Cold War, Shoplifters, Roma, Capernaum. All were amazing, dropping your jaw to the ground with a tear running down your cheek But Capernaum, CAPERNUM simply broke my heart. This is film making at it's apex.

Capernaum A Heart Wrenching film and with a purpose....
A boy who has to survive. A tired, hungry child caring for others. Only the tiniest amount of humanity shown from strangers from time to time, but not enough to lift this dear child up out of his circumstance. In a culture where poverty alone doesn't dictate behavior...and being on the make creates victims. If you think you had a bad life - little baby Yonas and his hungry dirty faced companion and caregiver Zain, a child living beyond his years, have it much worse. Zain is fiercely protective of his sister and now of Yonas because at a tender age, he understands what adults are capable of. My thoughts coming away from this film...Be kinder to people less fortunate than ourselves -- in this film, the little (children) people truly are in dire circumstance. Not looking for hand outs, just humanity. The child actor who portrays Zain, is outstanding.

Eye Opening Regarding the Worth of Human Life
This movie is very accurate. Having supported orphanages in India, I have seen children living exactly like this boy on the streets. They hustle whatever they can to make a dime! There is no education for them to get out of the life. This movie will shock you and you will see how the poorest of poor help each other even when they have very little to give. This movie will help the viewer to appreciate having plenty of food, shelter, work and many comforts

a painful reminder of what human beings can be like if.....
you mix poverty and ignorance and hopelessness together and then throw children into the mix. the father says that he is who he is because he has never seen any other behavior. the mother was 'married off' at too tender an age herself. the children don't stand a chance of escaping their parents fate. i have experience with that world. i wanted to turn the damn thing off. only the stubborn resistance of the hero kept my eyes on the screen. i never cry....and i cried at the end of the film...the scene when the hero faces the camera. that look on his face is the look of a child feeling hope. great story. great actors. watch and learn and weep.

Very heart touching movie
This is a great movie shedding light on serious challenges facing a segment of society that is hardly noticed by others. The movie is brilliantly executed. We get attached the main characters forced to be street smart to survive. No hero or villain, but a deep sense of commitment to do right and stand be the persons we care about. Congratulations Nadine, looking forward for your next movie.

an important and stunning film
Wow. This film was nominated for an Oscar as best foreign-language film and I believe should have won, due to the importance of the subject matter (indigent people and refugees of Lebanon, a country which has been so generous, but is struggling with refugee and poverty. Simply amazing must-see film by a young Lebanese woman, using mostly (all?) non-professional people as actors, even for the main roles. Watch it twice: once for the film, and once for the director's audio commentary. I've seen it 5 times so far, twice on the big screen, and I'm still not done with it.
