Elspeth MorrisonThe Dorothy Dunnett Companion (Volume II)

Fascinating and useful companion
As anyone who has read Dunnett's wonderful historical adventure series knows, the challenge is keeping up with the amazing number of details and historical references in each of the books. This volume, and the earlier Volume I, make ideal gifts for for readers who want to learn more about the background of a specific detail and/or just want to be more fully informed. The alphabetical organization is a help in locating desired citations. The information adds to the enjoyment of the novels and makes fascinating reading all on its own. I don't always read introductions, but the ones written for each volume are both interesting and endearing.

Exhaustive and a bit disorganized.
Highly detailed but a bit confusingly organized.

excellant
For any Dorothy Dunnett fan this volume is a veritable jewel! More detailed information on historical charactors featured in her Lymond and Nicolas series make this fascinating reading. Dorothy Dunnett includes quotes and bits of poetry in her books, and many of these are explained or given in full within this book. I enjoyed reading this book very much.Reccomended for fans of Dorothy Dunnett books in her historical series.

Excellent Books with One Reservation
A little disappointed that numerous foreign language entries were lacking. The entries that do appear are excellent, and many of them would be difficult to find elsewhere. These are excellent books.

A great reference when reading the books
Filled with extra detail on the period and explanations of the poetry. All the imagery is covered. Well worth it.

Helpful and handy
This is a good little reference book with everything in alphabetical order. It was handy for those times during my read that I couldn't remember if the character was real or fictional and if there were things that I didn't understand or had forgotten.

Historical and reference
A full and valuable companion to the first companion book which provides historical background to people, places and events, and invaluable translations to the Lymond Chronicles and a few pages on Niccolo.Book two is almost entirely a companion to the House of Niccolo books. It provides useful biographies of the real people of the 15th century who come into these books, as well as background to historical events and places. I found I did not use this book as much as I used the first companion book while reading the Lymond books. It may be because DD doesn't have her lead characters breaking into different languages quite as often as Francis Crawford of Lymond was prone to do.

Good service; great book.

Three Stars
Although historically accurate, the book doesn't enhance the experience of reading Dunnett's superb historical novels.
