I read a lot of the mixed-satisfaction Amazon reviews before I ordered this, and was cognizant of the "colors vary" language in the advertisement, but for the price of the thing, I figured it was worth a try. The one I received looked a bit small when it first came out of the box, however it looked a lot bigger when operating in front of my delighted grandkids. Mine was not exactly the design pictured in the ad, but was equally nice and very acceptable. The body is painted tin and the plunger is metal. The top grip of the plunger is red plastic and the bottom of the spinner is red plastic. It all goes together nicely though. The balance and performance of the spinner is really impressive and it spins a very long time. The metal parts clank a bit when you push/pull the plunger up and down, but that seems part of the "retro" fun. It "whirs" rather than whistles, but it's an appealing kind of whirring that makes a kid listen to hear it, rather than making some loud, obtrusive sound that irritates the adults nearby. Whatever experience the negative reviewers had notwithstanding, the one I received was a beautiful toy, the right size for a child of the age it's designed for. There may have been bigger ones when we were kids, or maybe we were smaller then and the toy just seemed bigger for that reason.

I bought this tin spinning top as a New Year gift for my daughter. She asked Santa for a spinning top herself, so expectations were high. The design is lovely. The colors are bright, the pattern is clear, and it feels like a classic, well-made toy. The size is small and convenient, but the sound is quite loud when it spins, which might surprise some parents. What’s important to know is that this toy requires good coordination. The bottom is very smooth, so it easily slides on the floor instead of gripping it. Because of this, it was difficult for my young child to learn how to start it on her own. With an adult’s hand and a bit of practice, it works well, but it’s not very intuitive for small kids. Overall, it’s a beautiful and fun spinning top with great visual quality. I’m giving it 4 stars because it’s better suited for older children or adult-assisted play rather than independent play for younger kids.

I buy these for my dog. She is a ShihTzu and chases it all through the house, spins it round and round until she’s panting, holds it in her paws until she gets her breath, then starts again. I always buy two, and when I give her the last one, order two more. It’s so funny, and keeps her exercise up and her weight down while providing laughs for anyone who happens to be here. The price keeps going up, but I keep ordering them. It is so worth it.

Ordered on 11/2017, the top has now been in use for over 3 years, intermittently though, by a then 2 and now 6 year old boy. At age 2 - 3, in the beginning, adult supervision and guidance are a must, but it is a worthwhile learning experience. It teaches the child to balance the top while exerting sustained vertical pressure; a good exercise in physical coordination. At first, it is a little frustrating and the child needs encouragement. It also teaches patience and persistence. The rewards: once the top turns at high speed, it will keep doing so for a good while, along the top's circumference, the colors mingle in entertaining moving patterns. If the top moves at high speed, it also produces a nice modulated whistling sound that greatly adds to the interest, and really catches the child's attention. The toy, so far, has withstood the sometimes rough handling of a little boy; it gained some bumps but its balance hasn't been affected and it keeps on working nicely. While visiting us, my other granddaughter loved it. If new ones were still sold by Amazon, I would order one for her.

I like products that actually work and this top does not work. It also arrived dented on top. That’s what happens when it gets packed uncovered in an Amazon box with other things. I wanted to give this to my grandkids but not now. Please don’t waste your money on this.

The top is much smaller than advertised-6"x6". Instead, it's only 5" in diameter which is disappointing since most tops like this are 6"x6". The seller needs to represent the dimensions of the product accurately. Also, it arrived in a yellow padded Amazon envelope with the top in a plastic bag. It's surprising a top wouldn't come in a box to avoid denting the metal. Luckily, ours arrived with no dent. It does work and has a low frequency whistle when it spins. I have looked for one to replace our 30+ year old one that our children and grandchildren loved. Hopefully, this one will be as popular as its predecessor.

Great as a gift or to keep at home for when grandkids come for a visit. Well made and highly recommend. Great gift idea if you have a child who likes to watch spinning things. Get several and see who can get theirs to spin the longest! Great fun for all ages! Highly recommend and would buy again in a heartbeat. And actually, I've already purchased three! We took one with us in a bag up to a fall parade on main street and the kids, 4 and 3 had fun spinning as we waited for the parade to start! Would be great to take along while waiting for a doctor's appointment.
