great leash, but one flaw
This retractable leash is almost ideal, except for one flaw for which I've deducted two stars. It has a comfortable grip. It locks and unlocks easily (one button for each function and no need to force or slide the mechanism into place). The lead is a flat ribbon, rather than a cord which is safer for you and your dog because it reduces the chance of injury from rope burn or entanglement. The only flaw is that the ribbon sometimes gets slightly twisted in the retracting slit and this prevents the lead from retracting. I have to pull the lead out a bit with my fingers and then let it slide back in. This is a nuisance if I'm letting my dog walk on a long lead when suddenly there's no tension in the lead. It's potentially a safety issue if you need to pull your dog back from something such as a car, another dog, or something the dog wants to eat but shouldn't. Perhaps HappyDogz ought to investigate using a ribbon of slightly more rigid material in order to prevent this flaw. This company guarantees the product for ten years, which is admirable. I may write to them directly about this issue and see what they come up with.Update (4/13/15):I wrote to this vendor about the problem and they responded within hours offering to rectify this to my satisfaction. For their excellent, prompt, and courteous customer service, I've changed my rating to four stars. They informed me that they were currently investigating the issue. I would buy the next model that this company produces, because other than the retracting issue, it's a good product. Moreover, I like supporting reputable vendors who care about their customers.

So far so good! We bought this times based on the overwhelmingly positive reviews on Amazon. It shipped and arrived in good order; priot to us receving the item, the vendor sent us an email explainig how the system would work, and also clarifed informtion printed on the packaging. We purchased this for out Collie puppy, who at the time was only about 30-33 pounds. We use the leash about 4 days a week arond the house and everytime we take him out in public. The length is perfect for us; we wanted something that would give him some freedom, but not so much as he would be constantly wrapping people up by running around and entangling them. Our pup is now 45 pounds with a little bit more growing to do and the leash works fine. Sometimes when he runs and I engage the stop button, I have to push it twice because it didn't engage, but it works as advertised! I gave it only 4 stars instead of 5 because I am not sure about the duribility of the leash itself. It is made of a thin ribbon type material and I have noticed that the ribbon has crinkles down the sides in some places and I don't know how that will play out long term.Another reason I purchased this leash is that it had an excellent warranty. Here's hopoing I won't need it! Other than that concern, this is a perfect leash for our dog. Great product!

Has held up decent for one year
It's just okay. I've got a 160 pound St Bernard, and she's pretty good at not lunging. But two things are wrong with this leash. She moves back toward me faster than the leash retracts, and invariably gets tangled. It needs a stronger spring. And I seriously dislike the fact that the thing locks every time I push the button to stop her, because again, she'll bounce back toward me, and gets tangled again by the time I click the button to unlock and retract the leash.UPDATE January 2017. I've been using this for over a year now, and it mostly still works. The lock (which I didn't like anyway) doesn't hold anymore and the sides of the nylon tape are getting pretty frayed. I had to knot it close to the clip because it broke, but that's because Rigby likes to hold the leash too and her slobber probably disintegrated it. The spring has gotten a little weaker. But overall, it's held up with daily use for over a year. It used to stick when fully retracted, but that problem went away when the lock stopped working. I feel like I've gotten my money's worth overall.

Improved but still sub-par performance
Updated review after the company sent me another one to try. Pros: Lightweight, comfortable handle, retraction worked properly on this one. Cons: Lack of quality control. The push button to lock the ribbon leash will not always engage. It will engage if you hold it down with your thumb, but will not always click into the locked position. If you release it and try again you can get it to lock down by pushing extremely hard on it. I had three friends try it out, including two men, so it is not user error. I repeatedly tried to engage and disengage this lock at least 50 times over the course of two 30-min walks in case it was a matter of breaking in locking the mechanism. Problem did not abate. Caveat emptor on this product.Original review: This product was not good, and I returned it. The leash would not retract properly. Once, when it was pulled all the way out, it took me a minute of pulling and wiggling it before I could get it to retract. This also happened frequently when it was only partially pulled out. The rewind mechanism felt flimsy and of poor quality. I was hoping to use this instead of my 25'-ft leash as it would weigh less. I was very disappointed in this product. I tried it on three walks and gave up on it. The button mechanics are also poorly designed. It is too easy to unintentionally engage them. This was a completely separate issue from the retraction issue. To the company's credit, they contacted me after reading this review. Will update if they send me a replacement to test.
