Reconstruction Era Fashions: 350 Sewing, Needlework, and Millinery Patterns 1867-1868

Do you prefer purchasing a compilation of primary material bound in one book instead of seeking it from free sources on the internet? Then this book is for you. It's a compilation of the fashion notes and "novelties" from Harper's Bazaar 1867-1868. If you're expecting dress patterns, you won't find a lot. That being said, a lot of the material is available on the internet in places such as Google Books, etc.In terms of content, it's fairly well laid out in chronological order with the original descriptions for fashion plates/patterns, etc. The pattern plates themselves are disappointing, as there are no measurements given, only 1/2 scale, 1/4 scale, etc. with any measurements that were originally given on the engravings removed.While the corset patterns can be used for a lightly earlier time period, most of the material covered in this book is not at all relevant or useful for anyone doing living history in the period of the American Civil War--fashions had changed that much. It's really fascinating collection of super late 1860's fashion accessories, which unfortunately is not a time period that gets much attention in living history. It's such a niche that this book my not be relevant for a lot of people.

This book covers ladies fashion at a time when most everything was made at home. Its 500+ pages are dedicated to one year in history (following Harper's Bazar): Nov 1867-Dec 1868. It is post elliptical crinoline when skirts were narrowing. There are many ideas and a variety of scaled patterns for the shorter, round waists (bodices), sashes, belts and trims. Undergarments are included. There is some detail to instruction, but perhaps not enough for a novice. It is not all sewing. The book includes crochet, tatting, netting work, headwear, and more.

This book is just beautiful and loaded with information that novice costumers like myself will find very useful. Directions are very easy to understand.

I have only had a chance to look through the book at this time. I ,so far, have found it to be interesting and informative. Looking forward to learning more from this book.

The organization of this book makes your brain hurt, but at least there's an index to help find what you need. Why she arranged this one by date, but most of her others by clothing item, I have no idea. There is a wealth of information, but you have to dig for it.

This is a lovely book. I wanted patterns for gowns, but this has some patterns, drawings, and diagrams of accessories, undergarments, coats, and wraps. A fascinating look at all the trinkets that one sometimes overlooks in period costuming.

The book is great, but I was hoping more for dress patterns, there's not much, and it's mostly day wear, but what it does have is amazing and very valuable information. A great book to add to my costume library.

This book had authentic, accurate costume information with nice commentary from the author at the beginning. Also had helpful reference information to help understand and use the patterns. I felt I was a lady of the 1800's reading the magazine for the first time.

Como todos los de Grimble, modelos sacados de revistas de la época. Éste en concreto trae pocos patrones, en comparación con los siguientes. Muy recomendable, pues encontrar información de esta época a veces es complicado.

Definitely is worth the price. Lots of information, patterns and pictures.

1867年11月から1868年12月の間に発行されたアメリカの週刊婦人雑誌の総集編っぽい1冊です。電話帳並みの分厚さです♪飾り襟や袖、トリミングの図案ばかりかなと思ってたけど、ドレスのパターンもちゃんと載ってました。（マントやナイトウエア、コルセットも）この時代流行した帽子（小ぶりのボンネット）の作り方もあります。緻密なイラストでとてもわかりやすい運針の解説も載ってます。（ボタンホールの作り方とか、ドレスの飾りひだのとり方とか、ポケットのつけ方とか。コルセットのボーンを入れての縫い方のイラストがあったり）なかなかのすぐれものかも。（英語が読めたらもっといいんだけど＾＾；）昔のご婦人はこの雑誌を見てワードローブを充実させてたそうです。

なんでも載っています！！下着からドレス、バッグや帽子、ヘアピースなどなどパターンや作り方まで紹介しています。　この本と根気さえあれば古き良き貴婦人のワードローブ一式を自分で作ることも可能ではないかしら。　イラストも美しく、見ているだけでもわくわくします。
