Good, but not great.
When I first listened this latest offering from Zebrahead, I was unsure about how I felt about the album - I have been listening to Zebrahead since my early teens, enjoying the development of the band from Justin to Matty, from Greg to Dan, but gradually they seem to be moving away from the sound that I enjoyed, the Broadcast to the World and Get Nice! songs. Their last album, Call Your Friends, was a very mixed bag, and I just couldn't get over how much auto-tune seemed to be used on The Early Years. I listened to 'Worse Than This' when it was released - I was excited. I listened to 'Save Your Breath' - I was disappointed. Now that the album is here, my mixed feelings haven't gone away. Some of the songs are brilliant - as mentioned above, 'Worse Than This' had me thinking the band were going back to their earlier sound. Then, songs like 'Keep it to Myself', 'So What', 'Walk the Plank' and 'Battle Hymn' add to the enjoyment, with an element of funk that Zebrahead haven't shown since their first major album, Waste of Mind, which is a really interesting and effective step to take. But then there are songs like 'Kings of the Here and Now' - a car crash of a song - and 'Who Brings a Knife to a Gunfight'. They just sound a bit lazy, and I can't say I had a good time listening to them. I get that they have to keep developing and pushing things with every new album they produce, but we could really do without songs like these. Overall, it's a good album, with some good songs to listen to. But I can't help but think that if Greg was still around, the album could have been even better.
