Bodhran: Beyond the Basics Book/CD Set Paperback – March 29, 2011

This is a excellent bodhran technique/workout book. It goes through just about every possible rhythmic and accent combination you can play in reel, jig, waltz and slip jig time. For hornpipes you can just swing the eighth notes in the reel section. It doesn't so much show you what to play but it gives you the technique and vocabulary to play what the music calls for. The exercises in this book can also be applied to one handed irish bones playing. I actually use it more for the bones than the bodhran. I play the exercises in this book with the play along tracks from the cd included with the first book. It is helpful to play along with actual music and not just a metronome. This is the only book of its kind and is a must for all bones and bodhran players.

A well written and easy to follow book. It covers the basics to get you started playing and the CD is good. But his "Beyond the Basics" along with this one. Both are very good.

Tons of great exercises in here; probably not for a beginner.

Es un gran libro que viene con multitud de ejercicios para que practiques diferentes ritmos y combinaciones. Además incluye solos con audio para que resulte algo más dinámico y el aprendizaje sea más lúdico y completo. Es cien por cien recomendable para mejorar tus habilidades con el bodhran.

Si tratta di un eserciziario, non di un metodo di tecnica. La sezione dedicata alla tecnica esecutiva, che si trova alla fine del libro, è piuttosto breve, ma serve comunque a dare qualche dritta (per il resto ci si può benissimo orientare seguendo qualche tutorial sulla rete). Gli esercizi sembrano piuttosto ripetitivi, ma di fatto introducono progressivamente difficoltà esecutive che a prima vista non sembrano tali, quindi consiglio di procedere ordinatamente e con calma, usando sempre il metronomo Il CD allegato ha il solo difetto, a mio avviso, di proporre gli esempi a un ritmo eccessivamente veloce, per cui, se non si ha un po' di esperienza, si può fare fatica a riprodurli. In effetti, dopo un po' ci si abitua. A me (non sono un percussionista) non è risultato subito molto chiaro come si deve interpretare il simbolo del roll: ho poi capito che il roll occupa non solo il primo, ma anche il secondo ottavo. Consigliato.
