takes time to prep it right, but worth it.
I ordered this mattress protector for my boyfreind who had a run-in with bedbugs a few years ago and is still a bit paranoid about it. He had just purchased a new queen sized pillow top mattress a couple months prior, and I figured this would be a good time to protect it and a chance to give him some extra peace of mind. To be clear, about the time this came in, we found what we think was a loner bedbug in or close to maturity, and I had gotten a few bites over the course of a week while staying there and sleeping on the new bed. Between these protectors (I bought one for the boxsprings and one for the mattress), a heat gun, and copious amounts of Diatemacious Earth (spelling? It's a fine dust of super small sharp particles that essentially cut into insects' joints and bodies, killing them), the bug was never seen again. I would highly recommend the dust to anyone fighting bugs, in conjunction with these covers.I would recommend opening the package and examining the seams - all of them, including the zipper - and look over the fabric for any defects. There were several reviews that complained about loose stitching or tears. These are made in huge factories on machines at a ridiculous pace - sometimes things get a little out of line at that kind of speed and scale, so it never hurts to check. Ours were both great. Also, some complained about the 'chemical' or 'plastic' smell. They are a bit strong, but running them through the washer and dryer first, as suggested on the package, takes care of that. We washed the two covers together, with nothing else. Initially, we left them zipped to avoid damage to the fine coil of the zipper, but in hindsight, I would say lust leave it unzipped all the way. When it came to the spin cycle, the closed zippers and the water resistance of the covers created giant flappy water balloons that kept throwing the washer out of balance. We unzipped them to release the water and it was all fine. They will take a ridiculous amount of time to dry. Just keep the heat low, be patient, and take them out to rearrange them in the dryer again to help them dry evenly. Some reviewers wrote about their covers melting or becoming brittle form drying - because they turned the heat too high. Just chill. You had to wait for the thing to ship to your house, waiting a couple hours with the dryer isn't gonna hurt you.We put them both on easily with two people, but with some patience and gracefullness, a single person may be able to do it. Having two people makes it easier to prevent tears in the cover after installing, while moving the mattress back into place.I gifted a protector for boxsprings and a mattress to my boyfriend for his new bed 4 months ago. He had a run in with bed bugs a few years that left him mildly traumatized. If you want a guaranteed rant, just ask him about it - On second thought, don't go there. We don't even go there. But, back to the covers....I read a lot of reviews - mostly great, and several pretty bad - before purchasing. We had no problems with either of our covers. Here's what we looked out for based on the negative reviews (and common sense):- Check all seams for rips, loose stitches, and the like, one seam at a time so you don't miss anything.- Check over the fabric...all of it...for any rips, snagged threads, holes, or the like. Do this right out of the package so you can use the crease linesto help track your progress.- Run your covers through the washer with a bit of soap to neutralize the 'chemical' smell. Unzip it all the way to prevent the formation of a giantflappy water balloon that with try to strangle the agitator as your washer jumps about like a wild rodeo bull (yep, this happened). Unzip it all the way to preventdamage from the zipper getting pulled open, in case the two sides try to go opposite directions.- CHECK THE HEAT SETTING ON YOUR DRYER - Turn it down so you don't risk melting any of the synthetic materials. If it feels like you'retaking a ridiculous amount of time to run it through and you're starting to feel like you're worrying too much, then YOU"RE DOING IT RIGHT!Take it out and fluff it and flip it around to help it dry evenly and (slightly) faster. I think we ran our covers through, like, 4 dryer cycles....- Have two people to help put it on. It goes fairly easy and quick with a bit of teamwork and a plan, and will help prevent potential snags or rips from tugging. We slipped the cover over one end and slid it into place, then zipped one side before laying it down. We than lifted the zipped side up so we could straighten out the bottom of the cover in order to zip up the other end. Laid it down once more to zip the last side, and put the mattress/boxspring in place.- Be careful with the zipper. Gently tug your fabric into place so that the two sides of the zipper are close to each other and aligned. The zipper is small and fine so it can create a good bug barrier... Be nice to it, and it should zip just fine. Ours did have a couple "sticky patches" where it didn't quite want to zip. Just gently tug and coax the zipper pull, or unzip a ways and try again. If frustrated, walk away. It's not worth potentially busting that zipper after all the time and money you've spent on it thus far.- If you already have bedbugs, understand that this cover is not some magical kryptonite that eradicates bugs by simply existing in the same room. It can only kill bugs trapped inside, on an already affected mattress by trapping them in there until they starve (about a year or something crazy). Diatemacious (sp?) Earth will kill any bug it comes in contact with. Try using this in conjunction with your covers.

Perfect for bed bugs
Fits perfectly. I used it for bed bugs. This is washable, yet if you are using for bedbugs, you probably want to leave it in for at least a year. That being the case bug a mattress protector you place over this that way you only need to wash the protector and this case remains clean. But the mattress and box spring together as mites and bed bugs infest both of these.

Seems to work so far (2 weeks strong!)
I was getting bites every couple days. I was highly allergic to these bites but didn't realize it was an allergic reaction. I went to the hospital 7x in two weeks. The doctors had no idea what was going on with me. They saw these huge swellings all over - on my legs, arms, neck, face. The huge swellings eventually turned into big bruises and they all healed. For two months I was going through this. I saw a flea so I sprayed everywhere and sprinkled Diatomaceous Earth everywhere and vacuumed all the time. But these swellings kept coming back every few days in new places on my body over a period of two months. I suspected bed bugs and would check every few days for signs but saw no signs. Then one day, I inspected my bed and box spring again and saw less than a handful of black spots on one side of my box spring. The coverings on my mattress and box spring are this pristine cream color so when I saw the small black spots, they stood out. Soon, I found a big bug on the seam of my box spring near the black spots. I took a photo of it and sent it to various people. It was a confirmed bed bug!I did research on the internet and freaked out a bit when I saw how hard it is to get rid of these bed bugs. I bought the mattress and box spring encasements, received them on Thursday a few weeks ago and immediately put them on. On the following Sunday, a few days later, I noticed 7 new bites and proceeded to clean my whole place like a mad woman. I scheduled free inspections with 3 exterminators. I also bought glue traps and stuck them on the base of my bed legs. I couldn't get the collectors because my bed legs were wheels and not stumps. The 3 exterminators saw no live bed bugs and only 1 nymph bed bug dead and stuck to the glue of one of the glue traps adhered to the bottom of a roller bed leg. The first inspector wanted to charge $650 for 3 treatments, 30-day guarantee starting from the first day of treatment. The 2nd inspector quoted me $350 for treatment of just the bedroom, 30 day guarantee. The 3rd guy said that it costs $250 per room but he thought I should just wait and see instead of spending so much money. He saw that I bought a big bottle of Steri-Fab insecticide and recommended that I spray it along the perimeter of my entire 1-bedroom, 1.5 bath, 1050 sq. ft. condo. It's been two weeks and I haven't seen a bed bug or had a bite. I still have dreams about being bitten and wake up in the middle of the night thinking I am being bitten and I always feel itchy, but it have had no new swellings or allergic reactions indicating that I have been bitten. I even went to a dermatologist because of the swellings and it turns out that I am generally allergic so if I was still getting bites, I would continue seeing those big red swellings and none so far!Hence, my conclusion is that these encasements really work! One note, I adhered the glue boards face down on my steel box spring frame because the steel female has jagged edges and I didn't want it to rip the box spring encasement. So far, no tears!
