Amazingly realistic for the price
I was very pleasantly surprised at how realistic this piano felt and sounded for ~$2000.The action is very well regulated and feels pretty close to a grand piano action. The graded weighting feels authentic, and the keys are pretty similar in weighting from the bottom of the key to the top of the key (so if you play into the key, it won't feel laborious). The keys are really also sensitive to touch--sometimes more so than an acoustic piano, actually. The sound and tone is generally very good, and you can play around with it in the settings (or through the app, which is much easier). I do find the sound a little bright, and the notes in the lower and upper registers can be a bit harsh. In general, though, it really does sound very good, and if you get used to some of the artifacts, it will definitely begin to sound like an acoustic piano to you for the most part. It definitely sounds better through headphones, though. There's also the ability to adjust the headphone sound to open/closed back headphones and to adjust where it sounds like the music is coming from (I have mine set to "front" so that it sounds like the body of the piano is in front of me--which, of course, it would be if this were an acoustic piano). The pedals also feel very close to an acoustic piano, and the half-pedaling function works very well. The attention to detail and ability to customize are astonishing. The app lets you customize the hammer delay, position of the topboard, decay time, half-pedal point, and other settings. They've also reproduced some of the mechanical sounds you would hear on an acoustic piano--like the hammer fallback noise and the damper noise--to make the experience as authentic as possible. One final thing: putting it together was a pain. I didn't want to reduce the rating for this, since this is only a tiny part of the experience of owning the thing. But some of the parts didn't really align well and the screw holes didn't seem to be drilled in properly, so it was difficult to assemble everything. (In retrospect, picking up an electric screwdriver or drill would definitely have made things easier.)(Postscript: literally the day after I bought this, Kawai announced it was releasing the CA49. Oh well.)
